Anyone Else Prefer the Ruger SR9 to the S&W M&P?

You might just be lonely given that S&W had to punt some of its non-M&P operations up to Maine just to try and meet demand by expanding production at Springfield.

Then there's the proliferation of after market parts and services for the M&P that doesn't show much signs of life on the SR-9 side. The M&P is also a coherent line-up from 9mm to .45ACP whereas the SR-9 and 9c are stand alones at this point in Ruger's line up.

Lastly, the M&P already has hundreds of official agency adopters at home and abroad.

However, the M&P has a one year head start and no safety related recall to contend with as did the SR-9, so time will tell. The M&P definitely has the hot start between the two.

I would say M&P for sure.

The Ruger will be like all other ruger semis, a second tier choice.

the barrel started peening on my SR9 so i said buh-bye and bought something else. I'm still short a high cap 9 now, though. Great FEELING gun, but not crazy about the workmanship on mine.

Well the M&P got help from Walther in order to make a decent polymer pistol. Ruger apparently didn't need any help. The Ruger is not yet a major player in the polymer biz.

That's what having European know-how will do for you. Of course both are far behind HK, Sig and Glock but at least its off and running.

S&W has been making guns alot longer than Sig, Glock, HK, Walther, etc. They know what they're doing. The SW99 was a walther design. The M&P is not. And in point of fact, Glock copied the interchangeable grip design for the 4th gens. Kinda ironic, given that Glock went after S&W years ago on the Sigma.....

Opinion, not fact. And the number of agencies adopting the M&P these days kinda suggests otherwise.

I like my SR9 but my M&P's are all around better guns.

The only thing i like about the SR9 over the M&P is the noticeable trigger reset on the SR9. The M&P is pretty weak and you don't feel that "POP" like you do on the SR9 or Glock

JOe

I adore my M&P like mad.

That being said, if the SR9 didn't have a such a terribly long grip, I'd seriously consider one. My LGS has them for $349 and they are a hell of a lot of gun at that price.
For $350 you get a gun that can compete with the M&P, XD, Glock, etc... but save you $150-200 for ammo, holsters, mags, etc...

I went into academy to buy an M&P and walked out with this:

After reading on the S&W forum about all the broken MIM strikers, I think
I made the right decision. I can't believe S&W makes the strikers out of MIM!

Nope. The M&P is a much better gun. I had an SR9, but traded it because I couldn't stand the trigger. I handled several of the SR9 compact models at a gun show recently, but can't say that the triggers were any better than on the full-size model, very stiff.

I wish Ruger would improve that trigger, because the SR9 is a perfectly good gun otherwise.

With that said, if you'd like a 9mm Ruger, check out the P95. It's not the most concealable gun out there, but quite acceptable for use at the range.

Good looking pistol, and a Sig to boot. I have taken advantage of quite a few handgun bargains at Academy, but they don't seem to come down on M&P prices. They want over $500 for the full-size M&Ps, and I have never seen any M&P compact in any of their stores.

With the current M&P rebate, I couldn't pass up on a $440 M&P40c at the last gun show. Same seller had the full size M&P40 for $410 and sold 2 while I was waiting for my paperwork.

Maybe the SR9 and SR9C has something to do with the great M&P prices. May be not. But more competition can only be good for us buyers.

As for the broken M&P strikers, may be it's the MIM. then again, maybe not. I don't intend to shoot mine that much to worry about it. I got way too many range tools already. I bought the M&P40c mainly for times I prefer - and am able - to wear a larger CCW than my pocket 380.

Besides, with so many LE agencies having adopted the M&P, I doubt S&W would allow an alleged "problem" to go unaddressed for very long. My test fire shell casing has a 2009-11 date on it, so it has been 5yrs since S&W introduced the M&P. If thousands of LEOs depend on it to defend their own lives and others, so can I.

I've got the SR9 and love it. I've had no trouble with it. The grip was a good compromise between fitting my wife's hand and my hand, but she now has a Beretta Cheetah 85FS so I put a Hogue Handall grip on the SR9 and it fits me much better.

I have never shot an SR9, so I cannot be sure. I did find something interesting. When I was looking at Ghost trigger connectors on thier website they also started making parts for the SR9. They even called the SR9 the "heir apparent" to the Glock. They just updated thier website so it does not use that terminology any more. An interesting thought.

Thay being said it seems that the M&P has more aftermarket support at the moment.

I would be inclined to listen to Full Metal Jacket who seems quite knowledgeable about all things polymer.
