Trying to get a sales rep position...help!?

Shall we assume that you seek to become a sales rep for firearms sales?

Are you trying to work at a gun store, or are you looking for work as a distributor?

I'll also mention that your member-name is certainly suggestive of your age and inexperience.

If you're looking for a spot in a shop, my advice would be to find one that's hiring, and put in an application.

While you're waiting for them to contact you for an interview, try to get a feel for the shop and it's clientele. Are they geared towards hunters? Maybe more of the tactical set. Or perhaps it's a do-all sporting-goods type store. Whatever the case, try to know what you're talking about going in - having special skills or knowledge that relates to the owner's customer base is a good thing to have.

Other than that, just keep pounding the pavement looking for openings. Be respectful, but persistent. Good luck!

If there's a big box sporting goods store in your area (Academy, Dick's, Bass Pro, Cabela's etc) you might go in there in ANY capacity, and work your way into the gun department. Once there you'll start to meet those reps etc. They can be great contacts into the better jobs. Granted you'd have to start as a mop pusher or whatever, but it's a way to nudge into the industry.

Companies that hire sale reps (in any industry, not just firearms) look for two things: a degree and experience. You might get hired without the degree, if you have a proven track record.
So, look for an entry level job in sales. It probably won't pay much initially, but at least you'll be getting some experience.

Sales is a skill. Granted there is a talent there also, but it is a skill. It can be learned, and if you intend to make it a life you should study it as if you were studying for any other profession.

If you have no experience I'd start reading all I could on sales and selling. That way you can begin to build a client base as soon as you start. A client base is also a big draw to potential employers. If you have people that will only buy from you, then attracting them will appeal to potential employers.
