Best grip for an SP101??

I've had the original grips on my SP101 since 1993.

I like the factory grip. Granted, I've only used it and the Crimson Trace laser grip.

I've tried a "full size" Hogue monogrip on my SP-101, and while it does enable me to get a better grip on the revolver, it loses some of the concealability of the original shorter factory grips.

Since I was thinking of putting a pair of Crimson Trace grips on my 2-1/4" SP-101, does anybody know how the Crimson Trace grips for the SP compare to the Hogues and original factory grips (as far as length and general "feel" is concerned)?

Best feeling would have to be the full-size Hogue rubber grips, IMHO.

Best looking would have to be Badger grips.

Hogues fill the space behind the trigger guard, so if you shoot hot loads your second finger does not take a beating. One of the great advantages of the SP101 is that it is the smallest .357 that can fire Buffalo Bore/DoubleTap level ammo, but without a good grip filling that space you will pay for it after a few rounds.

I've used the factory grips, Trausch grips and Pachmayer grips. I Loved the Trausch grip - very comfortable, but they were way to big for CCW. Once I got my Pachmayers, I never looked back. To me, they are the perfect hand-filling grip, and the best compromise between size and comfort.

I have the Packmayr compac grips and they work so good. I don't find it painful to shoot 357 loads. I often shoot cor bon 180 gr and 200 gr which do hurt. I carry this gun with me in Alaska where i live. I call it my "Alaska Derringer"

I also use the Pachmayr's...they are slightly more handfilling for me than the OEM, but do not compromise concealment like the Hogues.
I'm interested in the Trausch grip, but I would have to hold a pair before I bought them.

Says it all, eh? What does 'best' mean? Are you referring to functionality, value, bling factor, what?
If function is the point; what function? Control? Conceal-ability?

Pachmayr compac grips - best if you will ever need to conceal. Good non-sticky but slightly soft material. Perfect shape for my hands, not much bigger than the factory grips but somehow what is there fits better.

"Best Grip" to me means best compromise grip. To me the best compromise is the factory rubber...small, conceal well, and ain't bad absorbing recoil either.

I do not like those factory plastic grip panel inserts though. The horizontal ribs are not comfortable rubbing on my fat role all day long. That's an easy remedy though as aftermarket ones are available...these pictured are smooth oak.

^^^Yeah I'm with you. The factory grips are the best compromise and IMO some decent inserts make it look cooler than any of the other grips I've seen.

Here's mine:

My father's SP101 is now sporting a Hogue Monogrip. It's a dramatic upgrade in comfort over the original grips, which tended to "bite" you when firing full-power .357 loads. Over the last year or so, we've been going over our equipment, filling in holes and bringing problem equipment up to snuff. Both the Model 38 Airweight and the SP101 received new Hogue grips as part of the equipment upgrades. Now both guns are perfectly comfortable to fire.

For my hands? Factory.

I did, however, obtain a set of Badger grips, which felt really nice, but before I could try them, they were misplaced. Eventually, I will get around to trying them.

Pachmayrs feel OK in my hand, but are too "sticky" with too many of my cover garments. As my SP101s are working guns, not range toys, that rules out Pachmayrs.

Hogue revolver grips are horribly shaped for my hands, just wrong.

I have never seen Trausch except in pictures. I am curious about them; they seem a bit large.

Not sure if I am allowed to post a link to another forum but its a good guide to 3 grips mentioned here. No Trausch but mine will be here in a few days and I will comment on whether I like them better than the Hogues which are my favorite right now. But then again Hogue works for me on a lot of guns, in fact I once tried to convince the wife to let me outfit our toilets with Hogue toilet seats.......sadly I was unsuccessful with that proposal.

I also have heard some guys who say the Uncle Mikes SP-101 grips are the best but those are few and far between as they aren't made anymore. I have a pair for my GP but still like the Hogue Tamers better.

Mine had Hogues on it when I bought it, but they caught my shirt and caused it to ride up..... not good for a carry gun. They ARE more comfortable to shoot than the stock grips, though.

It boils down to what you want the gun for.

Very tight and firm - especially if you are shooting hot loads.

Some people prefer to use two hands.

OEMs ar OK, but just a little too small for me. I don't find the Pach's to bee sticky at all.

I have a set of factory grips I'll sell for $7 shipped so you can try 'em out. My hands are too big for 'em.

I too prefer the originals, I just changed out the inserts.

SP101 grips

I just got a pair of Altamont Rosewood with snakeskin pattern. They are awsome. The website doesnt show all the different designs they have. Mine cost $24 plus shipping. They look very very nice on the RUGER SP101. They have many designs in stock also. I'll go back again.

I hate to see your diet that you need recoil control in the loo!

Perhaps for you, but not for me. the original grips are wider at the bottom, which means that they print more against a shirt. As the grips would lay against my back while carrying, the bottom outside edge would push out against the shirt.

The Hogue Monogrips actually print LESS for me because they taper down a bit, so a **** rests against them more naturally.

The Hogues also make recoil much more tolerable. I couldn't get my pinky finger on the OWM grip, so it'd just be hanging off the bottom. I hate that feeling. The Hogues, on the other hand, allow a full grip with my hand which helps to tame recoil and get the gun back on target much more quickly than with OEMs.
About a week after getting my SP101 3 years ago, I put Hogues on it. I haven't put the OEMs back on it ever since.
