I have a 610 no dash and an XD 45 compact. I really like them both and each has its niche. The 610 handles the hottest 10mm loads like butter; it makes one wonder what the fuss around the 10mm is all about. The XD 45 is a great carry gun and has exceeded my expectations in its accuracy and it is very quick from shot to shot; I don't have any concerns for the aesthetics of my XD. I don't abuse it but it is intended as a IDPA and general shooter since it consumes everything I feed it and is as simple to break down as the M9.

Gunfighter - very nice. I like the pre-lock vintage, and that's the barrel length I was considering.

Why the conversion to DA only?

Hiya HOV ---- I might be wrong but I dodn't think any of the new S&W 610s are in five inch.

As to why DA only --- I was told by a old Chicago cop who was also a top notch competitor --- " if you want to get REALLY good shooting in double action -- get rid of the single action option" !!! And he was right --- you are then FORCED TO MASTER double action and learn to "roll" the trigger at longer ranges and "mash" it for closer ones.
I have shot MANY stages in IPSC/IDPA/Steel Challenge type etc. where you must engage "upper B / head shots" or 12" plates at 25-50 yards ---- then when you get to shoot a "chest size" or 10" plate at 10-15 yards -- they seem HUGE !!! Like I was told , Roll the trigger for a demanding shot and just mash it at close range.

Bummer!

So if you were to buy one today, would it be the 4" or 6"?

New option

So a S&W 610 is about $600-$800. What about another option....

Get a new glock in .45 ACP maybe like a Glock 30 for CCW. If you join the GSSF for $30 annually you can get a new glock in .45 for like $460. Then with the money you save you get your XD.45 Slide, barrel, & internal parts NP3 coated at Robar for $145 w/o shipping. Then you buy a 10' x 10' tarp for capturing the 10 mm brass at the range. Problems solved for $625. If you are a first responder or a pilot/TSA you get the discount without having to join GSSF. Check it out:

EMT - Thanks for your thoughts. A G21 is definitely in my future, but I think I'm going to wait until the Gen 4 pistols are out. Hopefully the slides interchange between generations... if that's the case, then I can have a very nice mix-n-match capability between my 3rd gen G20 and 4th gen G21.

I wish a tarp were allowable at my range... until then I have decided to just not worry about losing an odd piece of brass here and there. I ordered 1000 pieces from Starline to help make me feel better.
