I searched several times to find anything on this but couldn't find anything that helped me out. We moved here 7 months ago and I've yet to shoot even one of my guns:( because I haven't found a location that suits my needs. I'm looking for an outdoor range or public use land that can be used for shooting. I am very aware of the ubiquitous number of indoor ranges around this area but most have very strict rules about rifle use. (I shoot 50 BMG) I'm introducing a friend of mine to shooting hopefully this coming Friday, but I still need to find a place for us to use. So does anybody know of anywhere like this around the DFW area? Thanks for all of your help..:)
 
ouch. was going to make several suggestions for your side of texas until I read 50BMG. I would call Cabelas the Fine gun section and ask them . They sell your caliber and see on display from time to time. Surely would know. Have never been to Bass Pro which would be closer for you. Maybe a call there. Also check the Parker County Sportsman Club. *shooting range" . Alpine shooting range, One not that far from the Dallas Galleria.. North i think. And another north of Calbelas. Hwy 114 if i recall. Springcreek shooting range.

Hope you find what you need.

Life is to short to live in Dallas.
 
50BMG is gonna be tough in this area.

Pretty much private ranges are all I know of. Alpine doesn't allow .50, at least they have signs saying that. The old grumpy guy in Garland doesn't either.

Tac Pro has a range for that kind of thing but it's a good 2 hour drive from Dallas.
 
There is very little "public" land in the DFW area.

That site hasn't been updated in a while, so I recommend calling each range to verify if their info is still correct.

APG (Adrenaline Proving Ground in Greenville was just sold to the local PD I believe.
Ralph's Range in Tom Bean is currently closed while improvements are being made.

The Parker County Sportsman Club range is very nice. I've been a member for years although I haven't been to the range in over two years.

It would be a good drive from Dallas.
 
I have to disagree with the listing that shows Gibsons as "Black Rifle Friendly"....

The word "friendly" and that old guy don't go anywhere near each other :)
 
Yep and after the Texas Motor Speedway incident, some of the ranges are even less enthusiastic about .50 BMG.

Tacpro and Tiger Valley (I have shot .50 BMG here) might be your only realistic choices.
 
Years ago I visited the Garland Shooting Range more than a few times. It wasn't far from where I lived at the time. Back then they had machine shoots at car bodies and you could shoot anything there. Seems that has changed as the surburban sprawl has contined in all directions from Dallas.

It's not a public range, but for an outdoor range it's hard to beat. I've seen several folks shooting long distances, but can't say I've seen .50

Give them a call and see if you can shoot there and, if not, where do they recommend.

PS: From what I've seen black rifles are no big deal. I have three that I need to break in and that's where I'll be shooting them. Also, bring your own ammo, theirs is expensive.

They also have a great skeet shooting setup. You can rent a golf cart and choose from three courses. Absolutely fun.

There are several private ranges/clubs within an hour or 2 of the DFW area. I'm a member of one.

Most of them have limits on the number of members and a LONG waiting list. I waited about 3 years for my name to come up in the list.

PM me if you want info, but the last I heard the waiting list was seriously 3-4 years for most of the clubs that are reasonably priced.
 
Elm fork is good and one of the few in DFW with a 100 yard range, but I know for a fact that they only allow you to use soft point ammo on it, and on the other side of the back stop is the shotgun clubhouse, so I don't know about 50bmg, but you might want to give them a call, they might know somewhere.

but I would also like to know about any land anywhere I could go shoot around DFW, especially if it has an over 500m spot to shoot.
 
50BMG is best at Tac Pro. Join as a member and qualify on the 1000 yard range. Heading there tomorrow to use the 100/200 yard ranges.

There is a range I think south of Texas motor speedway, the story goes as i heard it at the track, that some guy shot off a .50 BMG over the backstop and it traveled at least a mile when it hit a camper trailer, through the camper, then took some poor lady's arm OFF

I could be wrong feel free to correct me. but that is the number one reason DFW is a hard place to shoot the .50, and a real life reminder of the range and power of the .50

Most of the story is certainly true, I saw all the news stories at the time. However I don't believe the guy was at a "range". IIRC, he shot into the air at an angle, thinking the bullet would come down in an unpopulated area, but it traveled a little far and was headed down at a steep angle.

If you are shooting in the air around DFW, you are already headed for trouble.
 
The shooter was over 5 miles away shooting at a backstop on some land. Ricochet went off at a 45 degree angle, ballistic up, and came down through the mobil home roof at the speedway striking the woman in the arm. Arm was not taken off, serious injury but not life threatening. Treated and released. Shooter contacted authorities after the story broke and layed out all the evidence. No charges were filed, as negligence was never involved. Pure accident.
 
well the summarized list from dogtown tom is pretty decent (though outdated as he mentioned) though I do know of one he missed, almost right next to Love Field. Pretty decent place, though I'm much closer to the Garland public range. I don't think either of these are very .50BMG friendly.. 100yds max at garland, and I've never seen any long lanes, and the website only mentions up to 25yds :/ So its basically a handgun facility only :(
