Full Auto: Too Much Fun

I'd love to shoot something full auto just for the experience.

Problem is, I reload pretty much everything I shoot, and I know I would be thinking:"There went a few hours of work in a few seconds." My ammo is too meticulously loaded to be "wasted" in such manner. But I guess that's just my warped mind.

It's a blast! I've fired miniguns, M4s, AKs, UZIs, MP5s, SAWs, 240Bs, M2s... a great time when you're not directly paying for the ammo...

I shot an UZI once, and it was realy fun. The only issue was the $$$. $40 bucks to rent the gun and 50 rounds, don't remember how much for each sucsessive 50 rounds. The tarrget was a mess after I fired 150 rounds at it.

The only FA I've ever fired that the ammo costs didn't add up rapidly was the American 180 with it's high capacity drums full of .22LR.

I was very lucky to have a CCW instructor that has his class 3, as well as a couple of his buddies that tagged along for our range session.

Had the pleasure of shooting a couple magazines out of a MP5, some type of AR with full-auto, and the one I will never forget: a WWII era, full-auto Tompson. To top it off, the wife got to do the same.

Wifey and I took our county sheriff's citizens academy a couple years back...which included a Saturday outing to view the SWAT and "familiarize" with the M4, H&K .40 and ....MP5 in .40cal. We were given two 30 round mags of .40 for the MP5, and typical husband, I clearly remember the range officer stating, no auto fire. Guess the wifey heard something different because as we were all shooting semi, we heard a quick 10-15 round burst...all eyes went to the right as the range master expedited to her firing point. I clearly remember telling the Deputy with me "I sure hope that wasn't my wife"....oh well, it was her first time firing automatics, after listening to me yak about firing Cobra's and M85's and M240's and of course, Ma Deuce, over a 20 year career in Big Green! But it sure put a grin on her face!

Believe me I load a full 5 gal bucket each of 45 ACP and 9mm then we go and blast it off in a short time. I NEVER worry about how much time and money I spend to feed my toys. I do have a time finding primers lately however.

I've had the pleasure of shooting M16A2s on burst, and M4s, MP5, M249, M240, Mk19, and M2 on auto. I hope for the day when that part of the 86 law that prohibits us from owning post 86 autos gets scrapped and I can get a real M4A1 for $200 extra and some paperwork. I'd love to own one with a 22LR upper that can stand up to auto.

Thanks to Uncle Sam, I've fired the M2, M16, M14, M1919A4 and M3 on the Army's nickel.

If you guys are ever in Utah, we have a couple of good rental ranged within the terra-formed zone. At the range at Impact, they have a G-36, MP-5 variants including silenced, etc. You buy the ammo, you load your own mags.

The problem is that the American-180 is the reverse of the Spencer carbine: load all week, shoot on Sunday. Seriously, how long does it take to stuff 265-odd rounds into the magazine?

Where is said place? I am in Nacogdoches and haven't heard of any in the area, I would like to check it out.

I've shot several rental submachine guns (H&K MP5, Thompson, Colt M635, Uzi, suppressed Cobray) and it is indeed a lot of fun. The H&K was my favorite, having rifle-like accuracy and good controllability. The second favorite was the Thompson, owing largely to its having a compensator, which made up for the .45 recoil combined with considerable stock drop and kept down the muzzle climb. As noted, ammo costs can rise fast.

Ive shot my fair share of full autos and was lucky enough to convince the wife we needes some of them. After working tons and tons of overtime last year she finally said yes. So now I'm patiently awaiting the return of the paperwork to get them in hand.

I could never understand the attraction of a weapon that you have to fight to keep on target. If you really want to have that many projectiles downrange why not just get a 10 gauge with OO buck.

Not to be sarcastic, but:
"I could never understand why anyone would want to drive a car that went 150 mph. If you want to get there quicker, why not just fly?"

I would never dream of using any full-auto weapon in a SD situation. However, why not take the opportunity (if you get one) and "try one on" for size, just for the heck of it? There's lots of things I wouldn't do in real life that I'd do for fun if I had the chance.

You bet I'd spend some range time with some FA weapons.
Maybe jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
Sub-orbital spaceflight.
Drive a NASCAR or Indy car around the track a few times.

Are any of them practical? Nope. But I bet they'd be a hell of a lot of fun!

There is a correct way to use them. When you are in the habit already from using weapons with a burst option, you find it much more natural to control your fire.

Shoot an MP-5, pretty much any variant, you say; "OH. THAT'S how an SMG is supposed to fire!"

If you have to fight to keep it on target, you're doing something wrong. There's just nothing as much fun (with your clothes on) as shooting a full automatic. My preference is the M2 .50 BMG followed closely by the Thompson. Maybe the .30 BMG fits in there somewhere too....
