Ruger Security Six

i have a service six and never shoot it becuase the DA pull is so bad i cant keep it on target and end up hitting like 2 feet low! and it seems to have alot more blast coming from the cylinder gap than my SW guns. at night there is a big flash that comes out around the front of the cylinder; but the gap doesnt look that big

sounds like something is wrong with it by reading through this thread? i just thought thats how they all where... maybe a trip to the gunsmith is in order?

With over 20K rounds of .357 and .38, my Security Six is just getting broken in. Near perfect trigger. Only "improvement" I've ever done is add a Hogue Monogrip. Otherwise stock. Love it.

conhntr- there is something seriously wrong with your revolver. get it checked out and fixed. It shouldn't be like that.

I bought my (new) 4" SS Security Six in about 1977. I have owned that one longer than any other gun I have and cannot ever imagine getting rid of it.

Conhntr: I have to agree with 19-3Ben. If it feels that bad, take it to someone who knows these guns or to a gunsmith. Or sell it to me.
:)

I had a Security Six that looked like it had been stored in a bath of brine and beaten with hammers every morning. No blue left, tons of rust pitting. Action half frozen. I sent it to Ruger and for $80 plus shipping they completely rebuilt the thing. Fantastic deal. I sold off that revolver a few years back but ran into it again at the range with a new owner, working great.

i might just send it back to ruger if its that cheap. mine is in pristine condition on the outside it just is not functioning that well...

I'm still amazed that Rugers are so cheap, and they can still be had for reasonable prices. The stainless ones clean up pretty easy and I don't understand SS owners who want to remove the warning on the side. I mean, you get stuck out in some remote region -- search crews are looking for you, but until the weather settles down, they're unlikely to find you. So there you are with nothing to do except wait. What are you going to read? That's right, keep that warning right where it is. You can even read it in the latrine! I'm just waiting for Ruger to add pictures.

I would send the revolver back to Ruger if I were you. The trigger group sound like it has a problem. Ruger will fix it. I have a Ruger Police Service Six 4 inch made in 1985 and the trigger pull and action is very close to my Smiths. The only difference is the Service Six seems to have a longer trigger. The accuracy is good. Its as good as my Smith M10 and just a shade behind my Smith M66. I rate a good Security/Service/Speed Six right up their with the Smith K frame. Its stronger and with the action will improve. By the way I have a Ruger GP100 4 inch and the trigger is no way as good as my Police Service Six. But I am working on the GP and I know it will get better.

Good Luck,

My youngest son and his bubbies went to range last week. His friend had a 4" blued security six and the cylinder would not open.

I verified that it was unloaded and placed my thumb on the extractor rod and pulled the trigger about 8 times and then opened the cylinder. I showed the kid what was wrong with it and told him how to fix it.

The gun looked brand new and belonges to his Dad.

I bought my sister a stanless one with a 2 3/4" bbl. decades ago.

It's not nearly as smooth as a smith, but it's build like a Russian tank.

I got started on Rugers after buying two Blackhawks. Since then I have kept one, traded one for a GP100, and purchased a Police Service Six. The GP is a workhorse, but I will admit/agree the Service's trigger is one to be jealous of. I would have no problem buying another in the 6 family.

My wants list:

4" barrel Security or Speed six.

I live in Cincy, Ohio. I will travel a little for a FTF.
I am not looking for the prom queen, a rare one, NIB or "Historical value".
I want one I can carry without worry, take camping, and general all around use.

I may seriously consider a shorter barrel.

My email is [email protected] so send me some pics and tell me about it and how much!

In the next few weeks, I will be travelling to North Carolina on a motorcycle trip so I could meet up with NC or Eastern KY/Tenn folks on the way.. Thanks!

You will get better response putting a WTB posting in the classifieds section. Also remember that if you find one out of state, you will need to transfer it to Ohio through an FFL near you (either one who will accept shipment from a non-FFL, or the seller will need to take it to an FFL in their home state and send it to your FFL).

Thanks for the info.. I thought (and I could be wrong here) that person-to-person with no intent for resale was legal.. I've heard before that this was OK. I'd hate to be wrong about this (I did take someone else's word) because I can neither confirm nor deny that this has happened in the past.... I will look into it..... Thanks!!

FTF sales will depend on your state's laws. Here in VA, yes, private sales are perfectly legal, as long as the sale is from one VA resident to another VA resident.

Crossing state lines, Federal Law prevails. You cannot purchase a handgun from out of state and transfer or transport it back to your home state other then through an FFL transfer via an FFL holder in your home state (and he/she will need to complete the background NICS check on you at the time of transfer). Either the seller needs to ship it to your FFL, or they need to take it to an FFL who will ship it to your FFL.

Explained here - http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/Federal/Read.aspx?id=60

pertinant passage:
Sales Between Individuals

An individual who does not possess a federal firearms license may not sell a firearm to a resident of another state without first transferring the firearm to a dealer in the purchaser`s state.

I'm quite pleased that the first handgun I bought was a security six. Traded a plain jane synthetic model 700 and $40 for it about 5 years ago. Still one of my favorite handguns.

I picked up one used back in the late 70's & still have it. The only problem was the small sized grip, but a Pachmeyer Presentation grip took care of that ...
