will .45 pistol ammo cycle in .410 pump?

This could be a dangerous pastime.
The Contender is built to function with both .45 Colt and .410 shotshell.
Your .410 pump is not. Consider the stresses of trying to squeeze a .452" solid pistol bullet through a mild steel shotgun barrel with .410" bore and choke smaller than that.
Don't try it.

I do not even have a .410, and I am not going to try it with any pistol ammo, but safety is rule number 1 and I appreciate the warning

Is there such a thing as .41 pistol ammo and would it work in a .410 pump choked cylinder?

And if you put them in a tube magazine aren't the .45's eventually gonna chain-fire in that mag? Of course they could!

Actually, they won't, other wise there wouldn't be any Winchester 1873's or Marlin 1894's, or even Winchester Model 92's.

As to the original question, trying something like that will result in putting your eye out.

Hope this helps.

The SAAMI accepted pressure level for the .45 Long Colt is approximately 25,000 PSI if I remember right. The SAAMI pressure on a .410 is like 15,000. I don't think I would do that. (If I am not exactly right on the pressures I am not surprised, but I an not going doing research)

I have heard stories from other guys that my Dad used a .41 cal speer in some .410 shells years ago when he had a gun shop...I bet you could get some serious FPS, IF it didn't blow up...:what:

I was talking to a guy who served in Vietnam who cleared VC tunnels a lot. He said he'd load .44 magnum rounds into a .410 sawed-off, but I don't know about the tolerances of the round actually even fitting into the chamber. He swore by it, said it was very effective. Of course, in war, I imagine a guy could be inspired to "make" some creative solutions work. I guess when Charlie is dug in and has a loaded SKS in a tunnel, SAAMI pressure spec load limits are the last of your worries.

Do you want to be a candidate for a Darwin award?
Or possibly loose digits from your hand or suffer facial disfigurement.
I have, in my years on this earth, heard many Vietnam war stories and some of them were whoppers.
The guy who said he cleared tunnels in the manner that he did or claimed he did is pegging my B.S. detector.

Consider this: a .45 pistol round has significantly MORE velocity and kinetic energy than a .410 slug. The .45 handgun round is honestly a LOT more powerful than even the most powerful .410 shotgun loads. This solid round will also exert constant full-force backpressure in the barrel due to completely blocking it, whereas a significant amount of a shotgun's pressure is lost to gasses blowing past the smaller BB's. This is not even factoring in the large size difference between .410 and .45. I guarantee you the barrel WILL split or explode, and you do NOT want to be anywhere near it when that happens.

What probably brought this question up is the Taurus Judge, Public Defender, et. al, plus the Bond Derringer, all of whom shoot both the .45 Colt and .410 shotgun shells.

The fact is, these pistols were made first to withstand the pressures of the .45 Colt round, and then the chambers were bored to accept the .410 shotgun shells. They weren't engineered to accept the lower pressures of the shotgun load, and then someone had the idea of dropping in a .45 Colt round to see if it would work.

I've fired both the Taurus Judge and Bond derringer with both .45 Colt ammunition and 2 1/2" .410 shotgun shells. With full power .45 Colt loads, the derringer recoil was a little stout, but not something that was unmanagable. The Taurus Judge was also a handful, but again nothing that couldn't be handled by the average pistol shooter. After firing them, I knew they weren't for me, but they do turn some people's cranks.

As for firing .45 Colt rounds through a .410 shotgun, it shouldn't be attempted.

Hope this helps.
