Is it legal to own a handgun with a threaded barrel but no suppressor?
Location: DuPage County, Illinois

I haven't heard anything that would insinuate that it is illegal. I see them for sale from time to time.
Someone may know more, but i would say do a search in local laws and BATF laws, if you come up short, its either legal or you didn't look hard enough.

Your city/state would be greatly appreciated to form a proper answer.

Otherwise, you'll have 100 responses that are just guesses. . .

I have never heard of any problems with a threaded barrel. Now there may be some city ordnance that regulates that but I really doubt it. You could just as easily thread on a flash suppressor or other device which should be legal. Don't happen to live in California do you??

It would depend on your state/local law. For example in VA there are restrictions regarding carry of a LOADED firearm with a threaded barrel.

VA 18.2-287.4
It shall be unlawful for any person to carry a loaded (a) semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol ...... designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer ..... on or about his person on any public street, road, alley, sidewalk, public right-of-way, or in any public park or any other place of whatever nature that is open to the public in the Cities of Alexandria, Chesapeake, Fairfax, Falls Church, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, or Virginia Beach or in the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Henrico, Loudoun, or Prince William.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to ..... any person having a valid concealed handgun permit or to any person actually engaged in lawful hunting or lawful recreational shooting activities at an established shooting range or shooting contest. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The law doesn't mention revolvers, or rim fire, just center fire semi-automatics and the law only applies to specific cities/counties. And oddly enough it is OK to have a threaded barrel when hunting, as that falls under one of the exemptions.

Get a flash supressor for it and you're good to go. LOL
It explains away the threading.
Threading can be used for more than just a noise suppressor.

Re: Threaded barrel legality

I like the flash hider idea best - thanks to all!

I know in Minnesota on the books its illegal to own a threaded firearm that can accept a silencer as silencers are a no-go in MN, except for the cops and the DNR to shoot suspects and rabid animals. Oddly, last fall when I was visiting family there I saw several firearms at Cabelas, Gander Mt, and Scheels with the threaded barrels. Walther P-22, HK 45 Tactical and HK MK23 were a few. Must be a law no one knows about any more cuz it was put in place back during the depression days to prevent poaching when people were hungry.
