TACTICAL rifle poll

Out of the tactical rifles listed, which one do you guys think is the best piston driven carbine: LWRC M6, XCR, or SR 556? I'm thinking in regards to accuracy, reliability, durability, ergonomics/modularity, and innovation.

Please feel free to add your reasons as well.

I meant for military models and LE models as well, which will include select fire variants. If this is better served in the NFA section please move the thread.

Reasons for the rifles I chose:

LWCR-nickel palted upper internals, ability to fully disassemble the piston, new style barrel (forget the exact term, not mil-spec though) that lasts for 20,000 plus rounds, 6.8 caliber.

XCR-amazing and cheap conversion ability, FAL/AK style bolt system and charging handle, did extremely well in military trials (from what I read) but was beat out by the SCAR, and supposedly improved ergonomics

SR 556-chrome lined everything, only partially able to disassemble the piston, runs for thousands of rounds with out cleaning, comes fully done up out of the box.

and all within my price range :)

Well, those aren't assault rifles as they lack selective fire capability, so I'm going to have to go with the M4 :p

well the first two come in selective fire variants for LE and military. However, you did call me out on the SR...but from a civilian perspective, allow some leeway.

They're all pretty much the same

not so much, they all have their own unique features as far as piston type, plating options (nickel/chrome/etc), and caliber conversion abilities

and the LWRC m6 is more well known for 6.8 instead of 5.56

I voted LWRC. But my vote comes from just handling the weapons. I have never fired any of them listed. But LWRC does have a great reputation. But then again so does the XCR and the SR556.

I'd prefer the AR platform with the SR-556, but since Ruger still hasn't shown any insightful specs, I'd go with the XCR. It has a good following behind it, and I've yet to hear anything overtly bad about it. It'd also be nice to have something other than an AR or AK for a medium-caliber rifle.

What's an ASSault rifle? Isn't that Libby DC spEak for rifles with "the shoulder thing that goes up"?

As far as tactical carbines go, I still prefere an AR15. Like a REESE. Lighter, longer handgards, better accuracy, longer sight radius, plenty reliable, and have ambi lowers or controls available now.

I think you will find that most THR'ers prefer to use correct terminology, especially when the incorrect terms used were coined by individuals trying to demonize certain rifles based on looks. Please don't perpetuate the whole "assault" thing.

Haven't shot any of the three, so I don't see any benefit to my voting. I would happily take any of them. I worry about future parts availability with the XCR and LWRC, but OTOH they maybe somewhat superior to the SR556 as long as nothing breaks or you can get the replacement part.

accuracy, reliability, durability, ergonomics/modularity, and innovation.

In those cases, they are pretty much the same. The biggest differences will be in how easy and expensive it is to fix the different platforms if and when something does eventually go wrong with it.

I also prefer an ordinary, well-made DI AR.

Make it a 20" A2 or flattop with an iron sight.

No rails.

Uncle Sam votes for the M4. I do too but cannot own an assault rifle.

Self, don't open any thread titled "assault rifle" again...

well considering AR's A stands for assault...since when did firearm owners get so touchy over semantics? Its almost as if you guys have fallen victim to their agenda and are afraid to say the word. I guess political science has numbed me to hurting anyones feelings. But if you prefer, TACTICAL carbine then....

Actually it stands for Armalite the guys who put out the Armalite model 15 otherwise known as the AR15. I don't think you are aware of the facts yourself Carter.

I disagree. I think it stands for Armalite.

since when did firearm owners get so touchy over semantics?

Semantics matters for a number of reasons. People are touchy over the term "assault rifles" and it does us no good to be calling them by the wrong name. If you think that makes me a victim of their agenda, then so be it. I'll be fine.

My mistake then, most of my terminology comes from the local gun shop and a few fellow shooters, both of which are highly capable of being wrong, as am I. My question wasn't necessarily termed towards civilian models only, but also military and LE models. Those are termed assault rifles. Maybe this may have been better for the NFA section. My mistake.

1. I object to the use of the anti-gunners bogus demonizing phrases which are inaccurate, and will not accept calling a semi-auto rifle an assault weapon or assault rifle.

2. But if you meant to ask "which piston-driven homeland defense style rifle available to citizens in the USA is best?", then the answer is the XCR, for my money. Complete modularity, adjustable gas system, 2-way bolt control, excellent ergos, monolithic receiver, legendary kalashnikov long-stroke system, extreme durability, charging handle in the "right" place, etc., etc.

since when did firearm owners get so touchy over semantics?

Since the anti-gun, anti-freedom forces began purposely setting a trap for us to fall into by making up bogus, demonizing, inaccurate phrases such as "assault weapon", "sniper rifle" (applying to any bolt action OR any semi-auto), etc., etc., etc., in order to win public approval and support for gun bans. Words matter a great deal in the subtle but ever-raging war for the hearts and minds of the fence-sitting people out there who vote for politicians, who vote for gun bans.

We fall right into their trap when WE use THEIR made-up bogus phrases - on purpose!!! Their plan is working perfectly, because WE are generally falling into their trap - many many more people now use the false phrases like the OP did, than harp on it like me and a few others in this thread, unfortunately.

But to answer the question, a couple decades ago is when the gun ban crowd adopted the demonization-through-evil-sounding-nomenclature approach, so that's when those of us who are active in fighting for gun rights got REAL sensitive about the BS phrases - quite a while back - but I'd say in the last 10 years is when the internet allowed the politically-minded to find common ground better, share information better, and (attempt to) form a unified front better with the war on gun bans with word choice. But we're still failing miserably, it would appear. I guess it may be a lost cause, but I personally will never, ever give up.

If we would ALL call these semi auto rifles "homeland defense rifles" instead of "assault rifles", just think how that could spread to our benefit - who could possibly be in favor of banning a homeland defense rifle?

The 'pro-choice' forces don't call themselves "pro-abortion", and the 'pro-life' forces don't call themselves "anti-choice", for good reason. If we gun owners use the phrase assault weapon or assault rifle, then that's just the same as the 'pro-choice' people accepting the label "pro-abortion". They resist that label, and so must we resist the BS. Rant mode off.

PS. I understand that you didn't realize, and are apologizing - thank you and we accept your apology - very little harm done as long as corrections are made - now 'go and sin no more'. Please post many many threads with questions about our many choices in "homeland defense rifles" or "tactical rifles". :p :D

so what is the correct name for all the semi-automatic "military-style" rifles out there?

-assault rifle (taboo; technically wrong since the lack of an additional 90 degrees on the selector completely makes it something else)
-EBR/evil black rifle (a sarcastic term that we use to self-demonize)
-home defense carbine (...wut?)
-assault weapon (legal definition, and hated liberal jargon definition)
-military-style rifle (anti-gun news report jargon)
-military-style sporter rifle (anti-gun news report jargon that we correct by adding a conflicting additional word in there)
-high capacity semi-auto rifle (probably the tamest of them all that is rejected because: 1) the libs still made it up; 2) it's like saying "Budweiser" when you could say "Bud")
-"freedom guns" (the sort of counter-elitist pretentiousness that doesn't help our side)

I got railed for my very first post on here over two years ago for this. If I'm gonna be wrong regardless of what I try to broadly label these, I wanna at least be wrong in the most accepted manner. Someone tell me.

Honestly the only term for rifles that are black and are in calibers not larger than the .308 family or .458-.50 thumper-style cartridges that I like is "sport utility rifle", I just like the imagery, and it certainly conveys the sense that just like everything else sport-utility, it is absolutely an ordinary, everyday object.

I think the most accurate thing to do is just call them 'rifles', since that is what they are.
