Bedside weapon

Colt 6940 next to the bed, aimpoint and surefire ready to go. I have no children, women don't like me :neener: and anyone other than myself in this room had to have A: break and climb through a window, likely waking me up, or B: Break down several locked doors...

Between the wake-up and the surefire my vision is going to be really hurting, but i'm pretty sure the other guy will be worse off, and I'll be able to align that red blur on top of the other blur and squeeze properly.

I've read in many cases a weapon mounted laser is more intimidating than any weapon pointed at you. The perp knows you wont miss and knows you mean business.

It's illogical to think that the perp, who is also in fight or flight mode, will actually take the time to stare at his chest, instead of you the threat.

That's cool if he does and is so undetermined as to be scared by the laser, but it seems more like hollywood action to me.

i have my usp compact .40 w/streamlight m3 on my nightstand beside my bed, my headboard is the bookshelf type i have my glock 26 (my edc) and spare mags sitting there. under my bed is my 870 w/2shot extension and light and my ak with a 30 rd mag beside my headboard.

i think i'm prepared for anything smaller than a squad of mutant nazi's in which case i'll tell the gf we should have went with my idea of a crocodile filled moat around the house.

I have a Remington 870 Express (12 gauge) next to my bed, as well as a Ruger SR9 in reach.

Once I can afford it, I'm getting a .357 magnum revolver and using that as my primary home defense weapon. Haven't decided on one yet, either a Ruger GP100 or S&W Model 686, 4 inch barrel

If money is not an object, an Ed Brown Executive Carry.

Money is an object though. I'm a broke full time student. So there's a Sigma 40VE on the nightstand. There's also a pump 20 gauge with #3 Buckshot in it leaned in the corner.

I honestly don't think I'd be able to whip out a shotgun on time from under the bed.

You've got to use what's comfortable for you. I like the Mossberg cruiser model with the pistol grip. It's light and fast-handling. As I currently reside in the city in a house with neighbors on either side of me at about 15 feet away, the shotgun gives me the added advantage of peace of mind. IF I have to shoot, it would be next to impossible for me to injure one of my neighbors two or three walls away.

Contrary to popular 12 gauge etiquette, I load mine with number 4 steel shot. At the ranges I'd be shooting inside a house, the effects of my gun with this shot would be devastating.

Kel-tec Sub 2000 with 33 rounds of 9 mm hollow-points. Viridian green laser + light. And I'm a revolver guy. But in my home, I want as much ammo as I can get; wouldn't be comfortable with 6 rounds.

Life is all about options. :D

Option 1: Remington 870 Tactical, 8 rounds of alternating buckshot and slugs, M6 light/laser. Spare ammo at the ready. Detriment, slow reloading (as if it would be necessary).

Option 2: Glock 19C, Trijicon sights, M6 light/laser, 33 round magazine with Winchester Ranger 115 grain +P+. Spare mags at the ready if needed. Detriment, not as powerful as a 12 gauge. I tried the penetration test: 4 sheets of drywall, 2 rolls of Scott toilet tissue and a 2x4 stud!!! That Win Ranger +P+ is potent!

Option 3: Bushmaster ORC, red dot sight, 90 round twin-screw magazine, M6 light/laser, no spare magazine needed.

any decent SA/DA 357 revolver, non-snubbie, preferably two (his and her's)
personal preferences being 6" S&W 66 and/or 3" Ruger SP101
(loaded with nothing more potent than 38+P JHP)

PS
if it doesn't get done with 5 or 6 or 11
it ain't gonna get done, not even with a full auto 50 BMG belt fed for me, and a RPG for her's

The pocketknifes in my pants that are right where my feet hit the floor. The few times I have ever woken up to something odd, the first thing I do is throw on the clothes I have ready, so my phone and anything I carry normally are automatically there. I normally have a breaker bar setting nearby as well. (Long, heavy, solid piece of metal. Has a lifetime Craftsman warranty as well!)

Yes, I'll get a gun eventually, but I haven't been 21 long enough to get a permit in NY, and I'm moving in less than a month, plus spend most of my time in campus housing, where having an airsoft gun is against the rules. :scrutiny: Nothing against big heavy tools used on vehicles though!

Also, tonight will be my last night in said campus housing! That, and I haven't exactly spent many recent nights in a bed, much less my own apartment.:uhoh:

I read a lot of comments and concerns regarding overpenetration, it's in this thread too. While I think it's worth considering, how many police involved shootings harmed innocent bystanders? Police shootings, by far, make up the bulk of civilian shootings in this country. I don't think overpenetration is a criteria police use in choosing their sidearm or caliber.

If I'm wrong, I welcome any information or thought.

Most LEOs I know carry HP's for what it's worth.

I think the sole use of hollowpoints is for expansion. Because they don't penetrate as far is simply an unintended bonus. If they were concerned about over penetration they would use frangibles.

Yes but my point is that maybe the pecentage of LEO related shootings and overpenetration would be increased if FMJ were more widely used. I'm just speculating, like you said, expansion is #1 but helping reduce OP is a bonus.

Good point, I never thought of it that way.

I think as a rule of thumb, acting and equipping like law enforcement is a good legal tactic, where legal. My original thoughts and comments about over penetration come from hearing people choose their weapons and ammunition - and make compromises - based on unintended casualties. I kind of cringe when I hear that.

With the exception of "spray n pray" drive-by's, I don't hear of unintentional shooting victims. I think there was one at Ruby Ridge, and look how it turned out.

I agree, if applicable, model your carry habits after LEA's.

I think that overpenetration is also less likely a potential problem than missing the target all together. In a heated gunfight, the rounds that miss are far more likely to be what hits a bystander...

I got my 20ga youth model Mossberg 500 loaded with high-brass #6's. The short barrel and stock make it easier to swing. The #6's will do the job no problem at the distances in my apartment and don't kick as bad as the 12ga. Plus, I don't want to send an errant 5.56 round or a hollow point into my neighbors' place; even if he is annoying. ;) Also, the sound of a pump shotgun being racked is enough to freeze even the baddest of baddies.

I don't see anything at all wrong with a shotgun in close quarters. I used a 12g/buckshot setup and felt super good about it when I lived alone. I now use a pistol in a "quick open" finger safe because there are others around.

I wouldn't feel too good about a 223, especially in an apartment, but it wouldn't be my first choice anyway even if a semi carbine was my selection.

If you lived in a farm house, would you still have the same setup?

Although I have shotguns, I keep my 10mm Glock 20 with green laser on my bed. Along with a blinding, strobing flashlight.
