HOLIDAY MARKS OBSERVANCE OF JACKSON’S DEATH, DAVIS’ SURRENDER
It is Confederate Memorial Day in South Carolina. Today, we honor the sacrifice made by an entire generation of men and women who sacrificed so much in defense of their country.

All state government agencies are closed today, as are many local government offices and some schools.

The day was chosen to mark the anniversary of the death of Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in 1863 and to note the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in 1865.

While 14 total states honor Confederate Memorial Day, only North and South Carolina observe it today (actually, May 10).

Some states chose April 26 — when, in 1865, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to to Union General William Sherman — while others selected Davis’s birthday on June 3 or Robert E. Lee’s birthday on January 19 to mark the remembrance.

The first observance of the holiday was said to have been held in 1868 when a widow in Georgia appealed to her state and other Southern states to join her in decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers.

Since I don't have to work, I'll be loading up some 9mm I cast a few weeks back.
