Hi All,
In my continuing search for the best first semi-auto for my wife and I, I'm looking closely at Glocks. These two guns seem very similar to me. I read in another thread that NJ law limits magazines to 15 rounds. That's why I'm looking at the 31. What would be the difference in handling between these two? Is ammo cost a factor? How about recoil difference? My big considerations are weight, sight radius, recoil. This gun would be for the range only right now and maybe competition far down the road. Again, this would be for my wife to use too.

Thanks!

instead of you looking at Glocks, it should be HER looking at Glocks or whatever.

I wouldn't pick out a gun for her, take her to the range, rent a bunch of guns and let her see what she likes.

Ideally I'd like to do that but there are no ranges anywhere near where we live that rent. I'm just trying to narrow down my options. If the Glock 17 is not an option for me because of NJ law, I'm trying to find alternatives.

the 17 is a 9mm caliber and the 31 is a .357 sig caliber.

Noticable difference in more costly ammo, more power, more recoil and more noise for the .357 sig.

I have a glock 33 which is a sub-compact pocket sized model in the .357 sig
I bought it cause of its power gain over the 9mm and if i was gonna carry a small pocket gun it might as well be a pocket rocket!

9mm is great for all around fun and still has the power to stop a threat and do it cheap. 9mm ammo is cheap compaired to .357 sig. Go with glock 17 and order it with 10 round clips. NJ law is about the same as us Californians'. STRICT! Ask a gun shop owner what size magazine capacity you can have is...i think its 10rds. IDK?

OK thanks. This would not be for CCW or HD so stopping power isn't really a factor for me. It's kinda sounding like the 31 might not be the best alternative...

You should take her to the gun shops and let her at least handle them so she can see which one feels more natural.

Glocks especially. The grip angle is not very natural for some people. For me it put the front sight well over the back sight on a full size Glock.

Though the Glock 30, which is a double stack 45 pocket pistol, fits my hand perfectly and aims true and natural in my hand.

On duty , I carry a G31....off duty , I carry a G17. There is no difference between the two as far as grip size and sight radius. The G31 does weigh more than the G17.
I started carrying the G17 off duty because it was the same size as my Duty G31....so by training with the G17, I am becoming more proficient with my G31(my qual scores showed it too). 9mm is a whole lot cheaper than 357sig ammo. I also reload 9mm, thus saving me more money. With more savings, I can shoot more. The more you shoot, then better you get. I just can't afford to shoot 357sig($20-$25 per box of 50 in my area).

The 357sig is an excellent cartridge, but it is hard to find in some areas and it is expensive. 9mm on the other hand is wide spread and popular.
The 357sig's recoil is similar to 40 cal , but with slightly more snap. It is still controllable, but a lot of women (that aren't regular shooters) shy away from it. My Girlfriend doesn't like it due to the blast and muzzle snap that it has, but she loves her 9mm's.

The choice is ultimately yours. I will tell you what I tell everyone else: Go to a range that rents both the G17 and the G31 and see which one you like better.

If your not totally focused on the full sized small frame Glocks, I would recommend the G19. It can do everything the G17 can do.

Well put sharps. If its going to be for both of you it is absolutely imperitive that the recommendation is taken into consideration. Men, for the most part, have larger hands than women do. And I am pro glock all the way but also a realist in saying that they are not for everyone. 9mm is an ok caliber. And cheap to shoot. But it all comes down to what feels right for both you and your wife. Every store that I've been in will let you handle the firearms that you may be interested in purchasing. But good luck and happy shooting!

Thanks Sapper,
The G19 is another one I'm considering but was not sure if the lighter weight/size would hurt overall control where my wife is concerned. Hopefully we can try them all out...

I think the G19 does everything that a G17 can do, but fits most women's hands better. It weighs marginally less, I'd say the felt recoil is pretty much the same.

If you/she is worried about recoil, the Beretta 8000 is very soft shooting and for less $ you can get a Stoeger Cougar.
