On the website, under the description of the 870 express, it says that they are now drilled and tapped from the factory. I guess they're trying to catch up with Mossberg!

It's about damn time. I never understood why they weren't drilled and tapped but the "cheap" chinese copy Pardner Pump was.

While it's novel to have a shotgun reciever drilled and tapped, there is always the issue of movement of the barrel in the receiver due to the tolerances that allow interchangeability of barrels.
Mossberg and Remington have the cantilevered barrels that will hold zero better, IMHO, than a standard barrel with a receiver mounted scope.

"AMEN" to that!!! Tapped recievers just "clean up the lines" that a reciever mount makes more bulky. I learned that lesson a few years ago on an out of state "shotgun only" hunt in Illinois. Thankfully here in Texas the point is almost moot. If I had to hunt deer with a shotgun only, I'd go the cantilevered barrel route. One less point of loosness to worry about.

As far as scoped 870 goes, I have been happy with my cantilever scope rail. You all are right that the zero will not hold on a normal 870 with it mounted on the receiver.

Since I shoot $3 a shot sabots I thinking of building a dedicated sabot gun.

I may use my 870, but I am going to pin the barrel to the reciever, that wayeach shot will be more consitant, the jiggling barrel is a huge disadvantage in accuracy. Then I will be able to get a nice rail mount and optic for it.

Remington is also offering an 870 variant that come with a pinned barrel. I would love to hear how they are doing accuracy wise.
