Might take a job in Houston, TX. that would mean leaving the Bullseye hotbed of the mid-atlantic.

Are there any nice outdoor ranges and Bullseye leagues in the Houston area?

Check into Bayou Rifles. They have at least 2 ranges in the Houston area. I have only shot on the Addicks (sp?) range and that was many years ago. Wish I had something like it now here in Dallas!

"houston area" is huge -- unless you want to get scattered suggestions that could be approaching a 2hr drive from where you might be, do you have any idea where in the metro area you might end up?

Yeah I would recommend Carter's Country. Very nice place. There are a 4 around the Houston area:

NORTHEAST
6231 TREASCHWIG ROAD
SPRING, TEXAS 77373-7698
(281) 443-8393

WEST
8927 Katy freeway
Houston, texas 77024
(713) 461-1844

PASADENA
2120 SHAVER
PASADENa, TEXAS 77502
(713) 475-2222

southwest freeway
11886 Wilcrest Drive
Houston, texas 77031
(281) 879-1466

I shoot at the one in Spring as another poster said. For indoor pistol ranges, Shiloh's on FM 1960 near SH249 is a very nice place.

The Medical Center is "inside the loop" and the city of Houston does not allow any indoor shooting ranges unless they existed before the area was incorporated.

Should you find a house some what near the Medical Center then it would probably be easier to drive to the outdoor range that is in the Addicks ( is that how it is spelled ) reservoir. ( Can't remember their name ).

If it sounds funny that a shooting range can be in the middle of a reservoir that's because the Addicks dam and reservoir is for flood control. Normally most of the reservoir is dry.

American Shooting Center

The range in George Bush Park between I10 and Westheimer, west of the Sam Houston Parkway is REALLY nice. Here's a map.

"Near the Medical Center" can put you in a quite good neighborhood, or quite bad. The cities of West University, Southside Place, and Bellaire are better-policed than Houston, which is good if you want a safe neighborhood, and bad if you drive with a lead foot. The areas inside Loop 610, and some distance outside 610, and east of Highway 288 are largely still quite marginal neighborhoods, with some limited nice new expensive housing, but still with some of the Third Ward character and characters. Be careful, some folks from out of state will buy housing in marginal neighborhoods, without enough research, and then be quite distressed to find they are in the same block as a crack house. The Fourth and Third wards are indeed gentrifying quite fast, but marginal neighborhoods do exist within them. If I can be of any help about a specific address, let me know.

I live in Bellaire, and drive to American Shooting Centers to shoot outdoors. I shoot pistols indoors much more often, at Marksman Indoor Range on Nebraska Street in South Houston, and sometimes at Top Gun on Beverly Hill in Houston.

I recently heard about a range somewhere south of Houston, which might be a more pleasant drive than going all the way to American Shooting Centers. I will try to find out more information in the next couple of weeks.

I don't know of any Bullseye leagues in the area, but then, I have not asked around.

Bayou Rifles Juliff range is South of Houston. Go straight down State Highway 288. Two exits South of Highway 6, turn West. The range is a couple of miles down on the right. Many people that work in the medical center live South of Town.

1000 yard, 600 yard, 300 yard, 200 yard, 100 yard, etc. all the way down to 3 yards on the pistol range.

It is a private club ~ $140 per year with no additional fees. Go to Bayourifles.org for information

Thanks. Looking for a nice neiborhood near the Medical Center.
LOL.:D

No, really...

PSC in Friendswood has shooting events quite often, or they did when I was a member a few years ago, prior to the opportunity to shoot off of my porch presented itself.

Have you ever spent an afternoon shooting during the summer in Texas??

Your next question should be about indoor, air conditioned ranges in Houston LOL.

Heat index this past weekend was over 100, and it's only June, wait until it gets hot in July and August.

for indoor ranges, I recommend Marksman Indoor Range on Nebraska Street in South Houston
Agree. Nice folks. Rapid fire, auto fire, shotgunning al you want.

Also recommend Memorial Shooting Center on Witte road, off of I-10 Westbound, between Bunker Hill and Gessner. Indoor, but you get to shoot rifles, too. Nice folks, too.

Bailey's,bout fifteen minutes south on Almeda from the medical center. Used to go there during med school with my buddies. Good prices, nice ROs, pretty neat little shop with reloading gear, guns, and taxidermy. Had some good times shotgunning there. Not that great for pistol shooting, ok for rifles.

I belong to Bayou Rifles. There is an initiation fee of $60 but they will prorate the annual fee for a partial year. No one mentioned Top Gun Range on Beverly Hills which is just north of U.S. 59 between Fountainview and Chimney Rock. This range has just been completely redone because of a fire they had about a year or so ago. They charge $15.00 a head but as many guns as you want to bring.

American Shooting is a nice facility and they charge by the gun.

In Your Area

I live in the Med Center Area. Let me know if you have any difficulties finding a good range. Also if you like IDPA there are a number of opportunities for training.

Don't let'em skeer ya 'bout the heat; after you die the first couple years, the utter lack of snow cures you of the heat later.

When it's shirtsleeve weather in March, you'll get the extra range time in to be able to cope with July August and September.

Trick is to pick out the one favorite good winter coat now, and garage sale the rest in MD--they will not move at all in a Texas garage sale.

Just thought I'd add that if you're into clay shooting, there's Greater Houston Gun Club south of the Med Center. You might like it if you can afford to live in West U. It's private and it ain't cheap. But it's nice.

Bayou Rifles hosts many competitions including Bullseye Pistol. American Shooting used to host IDPA. I have no reason to believe they've quit, I just haven't been there in a long time.

I frequent the Carters at Treischwig with their 100 yd max distance. THey charge per gun but overall great place to go shoot. The rangemasters are cool and take their job seriously.

For 200 yd range, theres American Shooting Center in Katy and Thunder Range along FM 1314.

If you want an affordable indoor that allows handguns and shotguns except rifles , go to Marksman Indoor Range in SOuth Houston.

An indoor range that allows handguns and rifles, go to Pasadena Gun Center.

If you want to be club members , theres the Bayou RIfles and Bay Area Gun Club, both are full in membership as of now.
