I'm about to get an ultimak and was thinking about either an eotech or a kobra red dot for it. I really like the eotech but I have heard that the heat from the gas tube has caused problems for some of them. The Kobra I was looking at was the model that doesn't use the side mount, I was wondering if using it would give me the same potential for trouble that I have heard about the eotech's on an ultimak. My only other choice for serious consideration is an aimpoint preferably the micro model.

Can anyone please give me their experiences using these optics with an ultimak. Any help or better suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have an Ultimak, the optic of choice appears to be the Aimpoint Micro H-1:

The Kobra is way too tall to cowitness on an Ultimak rail and puts too much weight out front (IMO); ditto for the Eotech. The Aimpoint Micro allows you to cowitness the iron sights, doesn't make the rifle nose-heavy, and is extremely tough, with battery life measured in years.

A Kobra is great as a way to put an optic on a siderail-equipped AK if you're on a budget, but if you don't have a siderail or can afford an Ultimak/Aimpoint then that is definitely the way to go.

FWIW, the EOtech isn't the best optic to mount on the Ultimak since its battery compartment is on the bottom, right next to all the heat. Plus, the OEtech sits too high for a proper cowitness, which is the whole point of the Ultimak tube in the first place.

My suggestion is to mount an Aimpoint Micro directly to the Ultimak for the proper cheekweld and co-witness.

Ha I popped in on this thread just to tell you that BenEzra is the man to ask about the Kobra collimating sight and red dots on the AK platform.

He clearly got here first.

:D

I do like Kobras, but they really (IMO) work only on the siderail. And if price is not a barrier, the Ultimak/Aimpoint really is a more robust system, even if the Kobra does have a nicer reticle setup.

The Aimpoint Micro gives the preferred lower 1/3 co witness. Only way to get a true iron on red dot cowitness (which is handy IMHO) is to use an M2 Aimpoint in the factory Aimpoint clamp ring. I have both set ups and they are both GTG on my amd 63's.

The heat from the Ultimak gas tube mount will fry an Eotech or Kobra sight. An Aimpoint is really the only way to go with the Ultimak.

Got Z-point on mine, and it works great. I never fire fast enough (full auto?) to heat it up to a danger point. Can you really do that, has anyone fried a sight, ever?

Ultimak makes a solid product, but putting a large sight on the gas tube will significantly shift the handling of the rifle. Some prefer it, some don't. I sold my Ultimak because of it. Had I gone with a Micro like Benezra has, it may have been a different story.

While I'd love to own that rifle, that's not actually mine; that one belongs to a guy on M4carbine.net. Mine wears a Kobra EKP-8-02 on the siderail for budget reasons (the Kobra is a very good optic but is a little on the delicate side):

And you can see that if you put a sight that big on an Ultimak, it would be extremely front-heavy and would completely obstruct the irons.

The Kobra is fine if you have a side mount and are looking for a way to put decent optics on it without breaking the bank. The Kobra is a decent optic, but it doesn't compare in form or function to the Aimpoint or other Western optics. It's big. You won't be cowitnessing with it, and in addition to the Ultimak, that is a lot of bulk to have out on the front of your rifle.

The Aimpoint has a much better battery life, is more durable, and has better glass.

Put the Kobra on a siderail if one is present on your rifle and you'll have a decent setup for under $200. If you're going with the Ultimak, it is worth it to buy a decent Western optic like the Aimpoint.
