IME these are the last word in shotgun slugs for defensive purposes againt large mean critters. I've never shot any of these slugs but I have a feeling that the new 870gr Dangerous Game Slug would surely quel a mean tempered bear:D Check them out here www.dixieslugs.com

There is no reason for the snotty reply accetableusername. Mr. Gates talked with a few Alaskan guides to get their opinions on this subjec before setteling on the final design of the Dangerous Game Slug. I'm sure the performance will be equal to or better than the Terminator Slug. You can read up on the terminal performance of the Terminator slug here http://www.shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=39309

Brenneke magnum hardcasts are probably easier to find and are also good medicine. Either way--prepare for recoil.

Stay clear of the tri-ball or buckshot loads for brown bear.

I am about to order a box of these to test in my Mossberg 535. I forgot about the 3 1/2'' slugs until reading this post. Honestly, I am a little afraid to shoot these in the summer, (my shoulder is fully healed from a sports injury but I want to be safe) I will wait till winter when I can wear my huge padded jacket and maybe second.

Wow but ouch. I think I dislocated my shoulder and broke my wallet.

I'll stick to Brenneke for closer defense and Sluggers for general purpose/longer range.

Alot of 3.5" chamber guns are also backbored. If your mossy is backbored, as I believe they are. Then any slug from it will be dangerous. I have read the warnings on mossy barrels before.

Check your gun to make sure it os NOT backbored...
