Mossberg Maverick 88 18.5'' Security model is currently serving me quite well..

If he doesn't have any, or little, experience shooting, it might be a good idea to take him to a place where he can rent/borrow different types to see what he prefers

135 pounds

Has nothing to do with it. Do not let that influence his decision at all. My girlfriend and my eldest son both weigh less than that and can fire any load through any of my 12 gauges with no issues.

FWIW, both of them like shooting my 870 (marine magnum) above any other 12 or 20 gauge pumps or autoloaders.

Great advice.

How tall?

A youth model may be in order, HOWEVER they are usually lighter. He may want a 12 ga with a youth stock.

I shoot with some ladies who are petite and very south of 135 pounds, yet they handle their 8-1/4 and 9 pound target guns with great speed and agility, so his weight of 135 should not be an issue. Gun FIT will be more crucial in a light gun, especially one shooting typical very hot HD loads. The idea of a youth stock, or having a stock modified to fit would be essential for him as it currently sounds

Take him to the range and let him try out a few different guns AND LEARN THE BASICS OF PROPER FORM.

There's more good defensive shotguns than good defensive shotgunners. Help change that.

I weigh about 135 and shoot a 12 gauge, 308 win, and 30-06. My wife weighs significantly less and still shoots a 12 gauge (Mama has a Wingmaster), but generally sticks to the lighter loads.

I wouldn't let weight influence the decision. I would worry more about length of pull, and general fit.

Assuming that you (or other friends) have a collection of sorts, take him to the range and let him try a few different models before he actually lays out some dough.

Price point is the big issue cause he's kinda strapped for cash. I'm thinkin of givin him a 20 guage first so he can learn how to handle the milder recoil from that first.

This is a common misconception - that a 20 recoils less than a 12 - just isn't necessarily so since a 20 typically weighs less than a 12. Shoot the heaviest possible gun with the lightest possible loads for the lowest recoil

Have him check out the Pardner line of pump and autoloaders from H&R. Good solid guns and very inexpensive.I bought a pardner pump Protector model for under $200 brand new otd. They are a cloned 870 and most all of the aftermarket goodies that will fit the Remington will fit the Pardner. You can check them out on line at the H&R website.

Yep, I was a young kid (well under 135) when I learned on a single shot early 20th century 12 gauge. It wasn't long before I was shooting and reloading fairly quickly. I also used my allowance to buy a slip-on rubber butt pad!

The weight of the guy has little to do with it, it's all about stock fitment. Even still, I did just fine with a poor fitting (for me) stock. Dad just didn't have the cash for a youth model. No big deal, it worked out well for me in the end. Still have that old Savage, Probably isn't worth a nickle but I wouldn't take a thousand bucks for it.

What the heck is a "Pro-Pipe"?

I wondered that, too. I've assumed we were discussing shotguns since the op mentioned semi-auto or pump and mentioned the friend being light in the pants. This is the first I've heard of them being called "Pro-pipes."

Or maybe we've been discussing a completely different topic this entire time...where's my slang translator... :scrutiny:

"Noob-tube", and "pro-pipe", are both references to the video game Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2's M203, and M79 grenade launchers.

A shotgun is not a pro-pipe, but someone may have been playing too much COD, or is really young. It is still summer.

COD4

Noob tube = 40mm underslung 'nade launcher. Pro Pipe = shotgun. In COD4 it took ALOT more skill to get kills with a shotgun class than any class outfitted with a 40mm.

CODMW2

Noob tube = shotgun or 40mm or M79

I always refer to the better of the two games. COD4.
