I just purchased a Remington 700 SPS Synthetic tactical rifle in .308 with the heavy 20" barrel. I do not yet have a scope for it and am reaching out for some guidance.
First off, I bought the gun because it seems to be a very accurate rifle out to about 500 yds for the price (which comes out to about $600 with shipping and FFL) then the 20" barrel comes into play and farther ranges are probably out of the question. So please avoid telling me I'm an idiot for getting such a short barrel - like many of my friends are so fully committed to doing.
I would like a scope that is also in the neighborhood of about $600. This gun is primarily for outdoor shooting at ranges. Sometimes at paper targets, other times at tires, car doors, and what not.
Overall, I would like to become the most proficient marksman I could be out to about 500 yds. I have a standard M1A that I can comfortably shoot at (and hit) fire extinguishers out to 500 yds as well with iron sights, so this is my entry into the world of scoped rifles.
I am partial to lower power rather than going for some 40x scope that can tell me when a squirrel is winking at me. I have looked at Leupold MK-4 scopes, but now they seem to be a bit more than I really need.
