There are speed loaders made specifically for "J" frame Smiths. Molded grips may interfere with their use. In particular; the factory S&W molded grips on a Centennial 642/642 interfere with 5 round speed leaders. There are at least 2 manufacturers of loaders whose names escape me at the moment. Do a search and you will find them.
I highly recommend Jet-Loaders. They make the only spring-loaded speedloader for 5-shot J-frames. Night and day -- much faster -- compared to HKS/Safariland (I have those, too) and they clear a variety of grips without a problem.
Or "Speed Strips" They might not be quite as fast, but they conceal much more easily and there are no fit issues with any grips. Originals were by Bianchi and later Safariland/Bianchi. Another manufacturer named Tuff Products, IRRC, produces what they call "Quick Strips", and they can be had in calibers other than just .38/.357...
Smith & Wesson make a very good speed loader for their J frame revolvers.
Its call another J frame revolver.
You see the word 'speed' and J .38 should not be used in the same sentence along with reloading. J .38s just are not ‘speedy’ to reload, especially under combat conditions.
So maybe getting a second J might be the best solution.
"rcmodel" gave you the most common choices for J frame spedloaders above. Both the HKS #36-A and Safariland Comp-1 J-C7 speedloaders work well. I prefer the Comp-1 loaders because they are easier to use under stress although with practice I'm sure the HKS loaders can be just as fast.
I use Comp-1 loaders for my J frames and Comp-2 loaders for my K/L frame revolvers. Safariland has a lot of carriers and loaders which work well together for carry and competition.
