Good morning!

I was going to load some Hornady .257 117 grain SST for my .25-06, using 4064 or 7828 but the manual I was using has disappeared:uhoh: The older manuals I have dont list 117 grain bullets.....I have looked at 3 sporting stores in a 30 mile radius and nobody has a reloading manual:banghead: Would any of you mind listing some specs for the two powders listed.

I appericiate your help

Hornady #6 or Hodgdon doesn't even list 4064 with that heavy a bullet.
It is too fast a powder for heavy bullet 25-06 use.

Hornady shows IMR-7828 - 117 SST - 25-06:
.Seating = 3.170" OAL
Start load = 50.3
MAX load = 56.6

Hodgdon web site also has IMR-7828 SSC powder data if you care to look there.

Thanks Rc!

I was using 4064 for 120gr. Nosler Partitions. The data came from a old Speer manual.

Would you mind posting the velocities of the Start and Max load?

Thanks Again Rc!

Yes ... 7828 is a much better powder for 117-120 gr bullets. I been shooting the load RC posted for quite a while! Very good accuacy and speed. I'm getting 3090 fps out of the 56 gr load with a 22" barrel Browning A-Bolt. I get more FPS out this gun than I did a 24" Win model 70, for some reason. Did I mention great accuracy.

Lyman #49 lists IMR 4064 for 117 grain SP bullets.

Starting load - 37.1 grains/2566 fps/40,300 C.U.P.
Max load - 42.4 grains/2866 fps/49,600 C.U.P.

It has the IMR 7828 listed a little more watered down than the specs rcmodel listed from the Hornady manual, with the starting load at 49.5 and the max at 55.

Guys like rcmodel have much more experience than I, so I would take his advice and use the 7828, but just wanted to let you know that Lyman does list data for the 4064.

Hodgdon data

117 GR. HDY SPBT
IMR 7828 SSC
3.165" coal
51.0g 2879 46,600 CUP
55.0g 3037 51,200 CUP

nothing for 4064

Thanks for your help guys. I think I will load up a few and hit the range.

I found the sweet spot!

51gr. of 7828, 3.145 OAL

I shot once to see where I was hitting and the next 3 shots made one
ragged hole! Thanks for the help!

You may find another sweet spot on up towards the 55 grain mark if you need the speed.

Usually there are more than one sweet spots with a powder/bullet combo, if the powder is one that can be loaded that way, a lower one near the starting point, one somewhere near the middle and one near the top of the powder range.

56 grs of IMR 7828 is max with my rifle, I usually shoot at 55 grs.
