Lone: .41 Special is a semi-wildcat made by shortening .41 Magnum to the length of a .38 or .44 Special.

Lady: Do a google on the subject, there is a good deal of discussion and data out there.

Jim's right, the .41 Special is a short-cased .41 Magnum and there is plenty of buzz on it recently. I saw some loads in Rifle or Handloader magazine in the past few years, but it is not a proper thing for a new reloader to cut their teeth on. +1 on the internet.
Get some help on routine loading, learn the craft some and you can work up to the unusual later.

Well, you open the cylinder, take six .41 specials, put them in bullet first, close the cylinder....

Sorry. It's late and I'm exhausted, and that makes me goofy.

my husband has been reloading for 15 yrs. he has cut down .44 mag.. to make the special.

If you're asking about .41 Specials you probably meant he's cutting down .41 Magnum brass to make the .41 Specials.

I'm not sure what you're asking... If you are already cutting down the brass so what do you need to know? Are you asking which powders and bullets to use? Primers possibly? Please clarify what you need to know so we can help.

It's been my experiance any powder that will make good .44 Special ammo will also work well in the Wildcat .41 Special too. Trail Boss, W231/HP-38, Universal or Unique come to mind off the top of my head. A standard Large Pistol Primer will be fine with any of those powders.

What gun are you using? Is it a modified .357 Magnum Ruger Blackhawk by any chance? A Flattop possible??

There was a feller on another forum that was selling 41 special brass, special ordered from Starline, last year. They had the Starline logo and 41 special on the headstamp.

They were a little pricey but he had to get his money back because Starline required a 50,000 run. He sold them all and I wish him luck. Would like to see more for sure.

I don't recall any manufacturer in recent history making a 41 special revolver. If it is being shot in a 41 magnum gun, I would just download 41 magnum rounds to target velocities and save some trouble.

reloading .41 mag

i would like to know about making the .41 mag. to a lighter load.

Use less powder.
Use a fast burning powder to get uniform burnup.
Trail Boss is made for the job; Hodgdon says .41 magnum, 215 gr bullet, 4.5 gr TB = 752 fps.

I bet an old timer could put in little enough Bullseye to get the results he wanted.

supposedly, you get better accuracy trimming the case of the 41mag down for the special loading. I read about it a couple months ago. A guy had all the info posted but I don't recall where it was. He claimed groupings tightened up significantly after the trim.

Since it is now clear that this is a thread about reloading the cartridge and not the gun, I'm going to move it to the correct forum

ladycolt:

ladycolt, I am assuming that you just want lighter recoiling .41 mag loads for you to shoot more comfortably?

How about covering some basics to help us help you:

- Have you done any reloading?

- Are you going to do all the reloading steps yourself or do you have anyone else to share the work steps?

- What reloading tools/equipment do you have?

- What bullets and powders do you have on hand?

- How light of charge/recoil do you want from the reloads?

Once you provide us with more information, I am sure THR members will get to the load you are looking for. :D

Where is your husband

ladycolt, don't answer that question.

floydster, for whatever the reason, she initiated the question on her own to us (maybe he's not available for some reason not mentionable).

We are here to offer information, not pry into lives.

Once we determine what equipment/components she has, we can then determine whether what she wants to do is doable by her.

From JimKirk's link:
The .41 Special is an accurate, pleasant shooting cartridge

Since I am assuming ladycolt has a .41 Mag pistol, I would suggest using .41 Special load data and using the unmodified .41 Mag cases to eliminate the case trimming step.

Comments?

CAST BULLET LOADS

BULL-X 215 SWC LYMAN 220 KEITH

5.0 GR. UNIQUE 798

6.0 GR. UNIQUE 900

7.0 GR. UNIQUE 1027

So, is the 215 gr lead SWC with 5.0 gr of Unique powder the lightest of .41 Special load?

I could sort of see making a .41 Special from a Ruger .357Mag, but it would be pricey.
I can not believe that a .41 Special fired in a .41 Mag cylinder would be more accurate than a .41 Mag case downloaded to the same velocity.
I would look at Trail Boss, 700X, Red Dot, or Unique (low bulk density powder). I would avoid Clays.
Since the .41 Special is not a SAAMI round, there is no industry blessed loading data.

ladycolt.....it would help if you could provide a bit more information. Exchanging information via paragraphs rather than a single sentence will surely help get you an answer that is more accurate and timely too. :)
