Just picked up a Ruger LCP - any tips?

My first impression

Here is my first 6 shots from a Ruger LCP, from 21 feet. I thought it was good enough to go back and get it out of the trash before leaving the range. :)

The flyer was shot #5.

The gun has been 100% reliable so far, through 50 rounds. It's quite a bit more comfortable to shoot than I expected. The recoil is not harsh, at all. I could have shot it till I went broke on overpriced .380 ammo. :) My P-64 kicks worse!

I'll bet the ammo was cheaper for that Polish popper. Nice shooting there guy.:D

Yeah, the Silver Bear ammo is great, and the P-64 is a great shooter, too. My first 6 shots from the P-64 from the same distance were even better, with 4 consecutive shots going through the same bullet hole!

Now this first group with the LCP was my best one, because I shot it specifically for accuracy. Once I knew what I was working with, I spent the rest of the box trying to get off a shot faster than forever-and-a-day, but I still haven't gotten the hang of the trigger. Some of the shots didn't even make it on the paper!

BTW, anyone know if it's safe to dry-fire this gun?

My LCP got the factory service. It's always run great and I really like it. I'd carry it more, but I like the 45.

Yes. All Ruger pistols can be dry fired without damage, and dry firing can be useful to familiarize the owner with the firearm. However, be sure any firearm is completely unloaded before dry firing!

holster suggestions ?

I recently purchased the Ruger LCP and trying to decide on a holster. Does anyone know if the kytax ( i guess that is right ) will mar the surface of the gun from taking it in and out ? what about leather ? will it do the same ?

I use a leather holster made by Bear Creek Holsters. It hasn't marred the finish (mine has a hard chrome slide) at all.

No tips, OP.

I like the little gun. It carries extremely well. But it's snappy, and it begins to hurt after a couple mags. It's been flawless for me. My friends however limp-wristed it and were able to make it FTF. Back in my hands, however, zero problems.

So it may be a little sensitive to technique. That would be the first thing I would check if I was having problems.

I put a bicycle innertube on the grip of my P3AT and my wife no longer limp wrists it. Worth a try if it becomes an issue.

I'm an old geezer FFL and over the many years of conceal carry I have tried NAA mini revolvers, finally settling on 380 as minimum, colt mustang, walther, bersa, keltec, etc. // LCP is my current little buddy and I really like it :D

I just picked one up for $269, new, with tax and fees it was $292.00. After swearing I would stay away from small pocket guns, "I have had a seacamp for 12 years", and all of them at some time or other have some kind of problem. The simple way I decided on this one was, I looked at 200 venders at the gun show, and saw that of all the 380 pocket pistols they had, most chose to carry the Ruger. One of these guys has 8 gun stores and 4 ranges. Just about all his crew had LCP's on them, they said that they can have what ever they want, and they chose this one because it is the most reliable. It isn't the most expensive by far so there was no reason to lie about it having about 8 little guns to choose from. The kel-tec makes a nice 9mm in the pf-9 , I have one, but the 380 "although stated many times was the model for the LCP", just isn't finished as well in my opinion. We all get duds, My buddy and I had to return a brand new 357 Mag that he bought yesterday and we checked 6 or them before finding one that locked up nice. The problem was that when you put ammo in it, it wouldn't open lol. Now he and his pal were both Marine snipers, and there was no way to tell without putting the rounds in the gun. We got a new one today with no hassle. That's what's good about dealears who have 8 stores. Now I took the ruger apart as soon as I walked in my house, and saw two things right away. It was dripping grease out of every crack, and the pistol was not going into full battery with the mag in. So I cleaned it polished it a bit and it appears fine now. I will shoot it in the next day or two and let you know how it went. I think that a lot of people buy guns and don't break them down and get all the crap out of them before claiming that they are problematic. I don't like grease or oil in the firing pin area of the pistol or for that matter anyware in the slide with the execption of tiny bit on the rails and top of the barrell. It will just cause the weapon to fail. A little alcohoal will clean out all that crud and a drop or two of oil or tri flow in the areas of wear other than the firing mechanisim usually goes a long way in stopping some of these problems.

Well, I used to love my LCP. The other day it kind of exploded on me a little bit. A big chunk of the breach face, next to the extractor claw, is now mysteriously missing creating a cavernous hole. I can't wait to see what ruger says. I'm so glad I was wearing my eyes and ears and still have all my fingers.

For the record I don't use reloads, mainly just plain WWB or Remington UMC and have only put about 300 rounds through it. This happened within the course of the last 50 rounds I shot out of it. I don't know when it happened, because the little thing kept chugging along even after the injury, and I didn't notice it until a post shooting inspection. It's really odd. I'm feeling a little jaded on itty bitty pocket 380s right now. As soon as I get a hold of my digital camera I'm going to start a new thread with pics.

And if he had left when the situation had begun there would have never been a situation to start with involving a firearm.

Huh? "Get out of my fishing spot!", "That's my parking spot!", "That's my bar stool!", etc. You get the point. Just because you are armed means you should just be pushed around for no reason? I don't mean every time you are confronted that you push it to a gunfight but that does not mean that every time a bully pushes you around that you give in, either. It depends on the circumstances at that moment. Sometimes reason works, some times waving a cell phone works and other times you just move on. A gun is used only when your life is in imminent danger but to meekly crawl away any time someone yells at you is pushing it too far.

With your logic you shouldn't walk any street after dark, not go to a show or club or park in a parking garage after the work crowd left. It is true that you don't go driving thru gang territory late on a Saturday night but to not do something you enjoy because it may piss off the wrong people is darn near terrorism. Where do you draw the line?

Where do you draw the line?

I draw the line as such: If I am worried about only "what ifs" then it's probably safe enough to go, if I am worried about credible threats that I know for a fact will most likely be there then I should avoid it.

I would recommend the Pearce finger extension. It gives a little more of a ring finger or pinky hold.

I like the Pearce as well for range/comfort shooting. And it doesn't pull the mag out during recoil like the factory finger baseplate did on occasion for me.

For pocket use I still use the factory flat baseplate.

Please link it to this thread. I don't want to miss that photo, and I'll be very interested to hear what Ruger has to say.

Mine has served me very well. I had a couple stove pipe jams in the first 50 rounds I put through it but after a good cleaning it has never skipped a beat in over 1000 rounds. Taking a deck screw and a blow torch to it really improved my groups at 10 yards. It got pretty rusty for a while from traveling around in a pack on my CR250 at the Oregon dunes. A little steel wool cleaned it up. This thing goes with me everywhere.

Will do. I'm going to takes some pictures today. I just want to make it clear that I'm not a ruger or even a ruger lcp hater, I own several other ruger firearms that work fine and I am very surprised at my lcp coming apart like this.

I finally traded my LCP in after carrying it for about a year. I don't really have a particular reason for doing so other than it was not fun to shoot AND (don't go nuts just yet - i know it's not a target gun) I didn't really want a gun that wasn't fun at the range. My wife gets very suspicious if the gun quantity starts climbing. so I traded it for XD SC 9mm. With XD's deal right now of 3 free mags, I couldn't say no to a good price. $449 out the door - but that's another story.

My experience was not one single failure in probably close to 350 rounds. I shot multiple types of FMJ and HP ammo. I did put a wolf spring in to reduce the recoil, but it still wasn't much fun. I will admit that the reports of failures did impact my decision to get rid of it which I suppose can be found with just about any gun. Lastly, I carry a 357 quite a bit so while it's not always an issue of capacity, for an autoloader I was looking for just a bit more. I can't pinpoint any one thing that led me to trade it in other than perhaps being swayed by the few and far between stories of bad experiences... not the best reason I am sure, but nevertheless that's what I ended up doing.
