Metallic Silhouette Rules

I have a S&W 686 6" barrel, the crown on it was pretty poor when I got it so I got the tools to re-crown it. Halfway through cutting it I thought what about how this will affect my category in metallic silhouette, the primary reason I got it.

I shoot in Big Bore Standing category. Standing requires either a production category weapon or a revolver category, which in turn is a production revolver. Production allows changing grips and swapping sights for manufacturer replacements, and a trigger job.

Would fixing the crown put me in unlimited now? Unlimited guys are shooting with crazy single-shot guns. Granted all the ones I have seen shoot in the Creedmore position so I guess I will be in Unlimited Standing but I'd still hope that a repair like crowning would be ok to stay as a production gun.

I just emailed my local IHMSA rep - who happens to be the man who runs my club's Met. Silh. competitions, and he said it is ok if it is like a S&W fix, so faced with a 45 degree chamfer I guess. He said something like an 11 degree crown wouldn't be a standard fix and unfortunately that is what I have on it.

He said he'd have a look at it next time a comp is on anyway.

My 686 originally came with a square muzzle with a 45 degree crown - about 1/32" x 45 into the barrel. Well it was ALMOST square, and the chamfer went 3/4 of the way around the circumference of the rifling...

There would be no way to put a rounded crown on a gun like this with a full underlug, not enough barrel sticking out to do that.

Oh well, it's still going to be fun. I'll have more fun with this thing that I ever would with a TC Contender lying in the Creedmore position banging away at them.

EDIT: I see your point Sunray, an 11 degree may be a "better" crown than any other but the difference is going to be negligible, especially on a handgun. I'll see what the range man says when he sees it. I know I can apply for exemption for a modification, if I join the IHMSA and shoot their comps.
