I saw that in Sunday circular. Great price. IIRC they are steel-cased Monarch brand which I believe is exclusive to Academy.

I was referring to the steel Monarch, and I have shot over a 1,000 at this point, no problems AT ALL so far, but I keep an extra extractor around just in case. Yes, it's dirty, but it runs just fine in my carbine :)

I'm not really a fan of Monarch, too dirty for my taste and I've had several hang fires in 9mm and .40. Still, I almost bought some a couple of weeks ago when the brass was at 5.99 for the price it's hard to say no.

I don't have a problem with steel cased ammo BUT I don't shoot an AR-15. However, I know plenty that do and they don't have problems with it.

I wish their was an Academy Sports here in Memphis. They seem to have some good deals from time to time.

Not a fan of steel cased either. Never shot it in any auto except my SKS. I shot the Barnaul steel-cased stuff in my Savage .30-06 once and had a devil of a time getting that round out of the chamber. First time the bolt was stiff as heck, and the extractor actually slipped off the case (bolt opened up with the empty still stuck in the chamber). I closed the bolt and retried it again and the round finally popped out. The laquer had partially melted and stuck to the chamber walls. NEVER had a problem out of that gun with brass ammo, and I've put hundreds of rounds through it.

My opinion is if I had that much trouble with an action I can manually work, I certainly don't want to subject my AR or any of my handguns to that and risk an extractor breaking. It's brass-only for me.

Among shooters who shoot steel-case ammo in AR's, there are just two types.

1. Those who have stuck cases in the chamber.
2. Those who will stick case in the chamber.

Scrubbing the bejeezus out of the chamber between mags seems to help, but who wants that hassle?

Wow, lotta people who won't use it. Regardless, hope everyone that likes cheap ammo and has Academy nearby got some before they ran dry. FWIW, I clean my AR about 1 in 3 outings and have yet to have a problem BUT I do recall people using a .223 chambered AR having issues where 5.56 were not. 5.56 here.

I wouldn't shoot that in my guns.

Good! More for me, and less demand will keep the price down.

If your gun don't work with steel cased ammo, get it fixed! You are fooling yourself and have no margin for error in its function. In a SHTF scenario you'll quickly be longing for ammo this good.

Its a poor choice if your goal is to shoot tight groups off a bench rest, but I shoot a lot of it at steel plates where its more than accurate enough and as they say "quantity has a quality of its very own!"

EDIT: The founder of the Academy chain passed away yesterday, I was surprised to hear he was a supporter of "social justice" and buds with Sissy Farenthould. Never would have pegged him as a liberal since his stores sell handguns (assortment does vary a lot by store) and what they carry usually sets the price to beat at local gun shows.

I will use steel case Silverbear in my chrome lined ARs even though I know it is harder on the chamber. I will not use it in non-chromed lined. This is not my opinion it is what I have been told by two manufactures of ARs. I think Tonyangel also had a different manufacture tell him the same thing in another thread....

At my favorite range the owner does not want Wolf used in his ARs. He never cleans the guns and if they are lucky they get a few shots of Breakfree CLP between rentals. He says he can't do that with Wolf.

There are guys who have used both with zero problems and their round counts are in the thousands. Whatever makes your boat float and works.

I apologize before hand Tony if I am wrong.

How many rounds does it take to cause problems; what specific problems will be encountered? I doubt other than saying I shot X number and started seeing chamber problems at round count X on my xyz AR is about all we can expect to get. I have maybe 800 rounds of Silverbear remaining and will hunt and shoot it all but not in 3 of my ARs which are not chrome lined. Those three get M855 or M something else with brass cases.

I care too much about my guns to shoot steel cased ammo in anything.

If price is why you shoot it bite the bullet and start reloading. You might change your mind about shooting it if you were to read the chapter in the Hornady reloading book about what happens to a shell case when the bullet is fired. Brass cases are high tech and do several very important things when the round goes off. Steel cases are a different animal.

Ive shot plenty of steel and laquer cased ammo though an ar15 and a mini 14. Cases sticking, lacquer buildup in hot chambers, its all a myth. The only negative things I can say is its not as accurate at range (meaning its 2-3 moa instead of sub moa that Ive seen with better quality stuff) and its a bit dirtier. Also for some reason the russians like to add the smell of paint thinner to thier smokeless powder.

Ive been spending my loose change on the Tula stuff at walmart thats going for the same price as what OP posted. Ive almost filled the rainy day ammo box with 500 rounds.

I have no problems with steel case ammo and have a couple cases of wolf for each of the semi-autos. But lately brass has finally come down to the point that I'll pay an extra $100/case and have reloadable brass left over. Plus it stinks less :)

Plus it stinks less
That right there is my only gripe about shooting the com-bloc stuff. I'm not so worried about sub MOA or wearing out my AR. I just HATE to have a breeze in my face and get a snootfull of that stuff. I think there's an old time hardliner over there who's laughing at us as he pinches one off in the powder bin. It's an issue with all my 7.62x54R as well.....

There is nothing that needs fixing. My guns are designed to shoot brass cased ammo (all AR's are), so that is what I am going to run in it.

As for a SHTF scenario, I have plenty of quality ammo, and won't be scrounging for steel cased ammo at all. If the SHTF though I am sure hoping my opponent has managed to arm himself with steel cased ammo.

I have a little over 2K rounds of steel cased and probably around 500 rounds of brass. Never had a problem with either. I don't own a non-chrome lined AR yet, but I agree on not shooting it out of that. For my chrome lined, I want it to eat any .223/5.56 I find, and so far, it has without a hiccup. It's also a lot easier to let your niece's and nephews shoot when it doesn't cost an arm and a leg :D. I also care for and about my guns. If something actually happens like everyone fears, I'll swap out whatever's broke and stop. Until then, laissez les bons temps rouler!!!
