I thought the PC627 UDR was neat when I first saw it in '99 in a gun rag ad. Of course, all I had then were bottom-feeders and a new Ruger .45 Blackhawk convertible - and my first DA was a .454 SRH. It would be 9/02 before I would own a S&W - 9/03 before I owned - and shot - a 'miniature' caliber - the .38/.357M, everything else being .45 ACP, Colt, or .454 Casull. Skip ahead to a DVD of Eastwood's 'Blood Work' - and there was that revolver. The 'cult' following had driven the remnants into collector's hands - the secondary market quickly ran the price up from it's MSRP of $1,199. S&W announced a re-issue early this year - same gun, PC Shop goodies included, just bearing the IL and in a grey PC Shop plastic box... and an MSRP of $1,185 - less than it's original issue price.
What you get still is a PC Shop revolver - ball detent lockup, trigger limiter, non-MIM parts, etc. Tweaked - even has a Wolff hammer spring. Pre-dished for moonclips, too. I bought one early April - perfect revolver - except for those Eagle boots. The second one came two weeks ago today - funded by selling my beloved JM 5" PC627 V-Comp. I love that first one - the second was a spur of the moment buy - it was it or another 627 Pro, which I also really enjoy. It's main use was envisioned as a home protector... at least that's what I told the CFO!
Believe me, where a 442/642 is a must have for a CCW, this UDR is a great second revolver to purchase - for a home defender/plinker. It has a great stock trigger - and is accurate to a fault, something you don't usually say about a 2 5?8" barrel revolver. As an N-frame round butt gripframe, it'll take the wide range of grips a 625 or 629 will take. Gripped like mine, it balances great. Loaded, it weighs over 2.5 lbs - the OEM boots are not that helpful in hiding it. That weight, and the larger grips, takes up the recoil of +P .38 Specials making them mild as can be - I expect .357M's would be fine, too - and it holds eight.
It was a lot of money... both times. I had to say goodbye to some nice things to fund them - but I don't mind a bit. I am smiling like a clam - or a cheshire cat - or a possum eatting poop out of a hairbrush. I know folks have seen them on auction sites for less, but I didn't complain - the second one was $889 + s/t in a Ma/Pa store - and they can't find one to stock now, so you might have to search for one... but it'd be worth it. Don't sell your 442/642 to fund one, however - you need protection!
