It was a convoluted story when it happened, but has taken a better turn as of yesterday.

The man who was like the only grandfather I knew gave me his Remington 77 when I was about 15. My dad is not a shooter, and one time when I was 16 or 17 coming back from an overnight at a friend's ranch I let another 'friend' hold onto my rifle so my dad wouldn't see me with it. In short, he pawned it. I never saw it again.

It can't be replaced, but I have found one just like it in trade and will cherish it and think of Doc when I'm plinkin'. It's not the same rifle, but it's as close as I can get.

Some friend, hope you "pawned" him. Glad you found another Model 77. They are a fun rifle to shoot. 10 or 12 years back I was looking for a Nylon 66, my wife was working a K-Mart, she said they had 2 Nylon 77s in the storeroom. They must have been there a while, because there was at least 1/4 inch of dust on the boxes. I bought both, kept one and gave my dad the other. Unfortunately a few years back my nephew inherited it, but of all the grandkids he is the shooter, so I was glad he got it.

I'm sorry for the loss of your cherished gift.

My late dad gave me his Remington Model 24 .22 (Shorts only) rifle when I was 7 (56 long years ago) and I loved that rifle. My son inherited from me when he was 6 or 7 (30 years ago) and cherishes it, also. It can't be replaced or restored as it would lose all of it's character.

Again........... sorry.

Man,how familiar this story is.
When I was 13 I was given a single shot H&R Topper 20 gauge for Christmas in 1966.
Then when I was 19 my very best friend asked to use it for the weekend.
I knew the guy for years and trusted him.
Mistake.
He used it in a criminal act and he was jailed and I never saw it again or him for that matter.
Glad you got yourself a nice replacement Plink.

I still have the Nylon 77 I bought new .... in 1972 I think it was.

I just recently purchased an Apache Black/Chrome Nylon 66 to keep it company. :D
