Well as some here know I've ordered one of these and it should be at my dealer any day now. However I've read about M&P's having some problems with a faulty magazine catch and dropping their magazines under recoil.

Now it seems these issues were confined to earlier guns, and the last posts I've read about this seemed to be dated a few years ago. Do you think this is a concern with a newer gun? Was there a serial number range the effected guns fell into?

Is this S&W has corrected or are there still guns out there with bad magazines catches in them?

No mag dropping issue for my M&P40 and M&P45 or heard problems from other M&P owners.

I say wait until you get your pistol and see if you have the problem - no need to unnecessarily worry about a problem you may not have.

If you do, give S&W a call - who knows? you may get lucky and get performance center trigger job and night sights like REAPER! :D

The mag catch was redesigned. It now uses a harder steel, reducing the wear on it significantly. I haven't heard of any mag probs in a long time. Your safe, enjoy it.

The 9C I purchased in late 2006 had no problem with it. I did read reports of this on some 40Cs; I speculate that their greater recoil may have been a contributing factor. Surely this has been corrected in four years. Don't worry about it until you actually get it and shoot it.

When I went through the armorer class we were told that the company had identified the vendor issue (how the metal insert had been hardened) and had corrected it by Fall of '07.

Naturally, they were still sending out replacement mag catches to anyone who reported a problem with one of the early production guns affected. We weren't given any serial number range.

My son and I bought early M&Ps - his a .40 and mine a 9. Both guns developed mag dropping problems, his more quickly than mine. Both guns were fixed several years ago with the redesigned mag catches.
