When preparing to enter a townhouse, one character tells another not to use an MP-5 and to use an AR-15.

He says the walls are paper thin and the 9mm will punch right through them.

This puzzled the hell out of me because I am pretty sure most special forces use MP-5's because they DON'T penetrate like the .556 NATO.

Obviously the situation calls for a shotty but they don't even show that.

But here's the thing....does not the .556 coming from an AR-15 carry a much more significant muzzle velocity than a 9mm Luger (sorrry...Parabellum) from an MP-5?

I think the writers on the show made a little technical error. I still like the show, mind you, but they need to get their ducks in a row if you ask me.

Actually, though it might surprise you, that's exactly backwards. High velocity 5.56 slugs have been shown in extensive testing to break up in common building materials and actually penetrate wall cover less readily than heavier FMJ slugs from handguns will.

The trend in law-enforcement is absolutely away from pistol-caliber sub-guns and carbines and toward short ARs for just this reason (among others).

...and it was needed for the plot, when the bad guy shot through the the guy / through the ice cream truck and stuck a passer by.

Speaking of little technical errors, most folks refer the common AR caliber as 5.56 or .223. I'm not familiar with this .556 you mention twice. Mind those ducks, they wander all over the place. :)

No they did not. An AR loaded with something like TAP rounds will not penetrate as much as a 9mm because it will come apart at the first barrier it hits. ARs are pretty much replacing MP5s in tactical thinking for entry teams. As for shotguns I think you want a mix of both. You do need an ability to take a surgical shot if you are entering a potential hostage situation. I'm far from an expert on the subject but that is what I've been reading.

And I'd point out that the female character who is the lead on the show DOES carry a shotgun, every time. Thing makes my hands hurt just to think of firing it.

...you do realize its a TV show.......dont you?.......not the most reliable place for firearm information....

....just assume everything they tell you is wrong and get on with enjoying the show.......

if i got my firearm information from TV, i would assume that the desert eagle is the best handgun ever made and that i could fit 90 rounds into one magazine......and that as long as i was the good guy, i could be shot at by 40 people and never get hit.

I watched Ben Casey and then practiced medicine... I get very few complaints, never gotten to many repeats, but very few complains.
