So she has generally had a lot of apprehension with firearms. She has never given me ANY grief on my collection but has not gotten near them herself.

A day ago she asks me if I would mind her going to a CCW class and getting her permit. Completely out of the blue. The big thing is she still has apprehension on firearms but she is sucking it up, and facing it head on. So I tried not to get too excited, signed her up for the class, and we went shopping for a 9mm. Had a bud who is also a very pro 2A guy. Told him I needed someone to come sit with the kids (we have 4 so this is a HUGE thing to ask) so we could go to the store, he was there in 5 mins. Gotta love that.

Anyway, so we got to the store, she tried out the feel of a few of them. We settled on a Keltec P11 which really fit her hand well. I was more keen on the M&P 9mm compact but the goal here was a gun that would fit her better than me. Got it cleaned up and ready for a range trip. Bud said let him know and he will be there so I can get her to the range.

I just had to share, if having 4 kids was not enough to show how tough she is, that she is stepping out of her comfort zone, and facing her apprehension with firearms head on like this, just seals it.

Good for both of you. I hope she enjoys the sport of shooting. Get her to start with a 22 pistol and some C-more type targets so she has a comfort zone.

Have you considered having your friend take her to the range? Sometimes the spouse isn't the right person to teach. Having my friend (who is a better shooter than I am, BTW) was a great decision on my part. Just a thought.

I did actually gave her the choice. I am pretty good but my bud is scary good. He was an MP in the USAF for a while. I don't know how much practice he got but it paid off.

It is funny you mentioned that, when me and her were in high school I was her boss at McD's for a bit. THAT was real FUN (extreme sarcasm there). But since then I have taught her to fish, given her computer lessons and such. Which is fun cause she is a lot smarter than I am (except for that one time I got her to say "I do"). Let's say after 17 years with her, I have found the right way to teach her and make sure I do not tick her off.

Good for you. Wish my wife would come around like that. I have P11 as well. I would second the advice to get a 22 and let her have fun shooting with that. The Keltec suits my needs for pocket carry, but it is not really fun to shoot.

When my wife and I got married 26 years ago, the only "gun" she's shot was her Dad's 12 ga., never anything since. I had a couple of revolvers, .357 mag and a .44 mag, she shot them a few times and wanted her own revolver. We got her Ruger Security Six .357, and a week later we both took a handgun course at a local gun range. For someone not used to any type of firearm, she aced the written test, and shot 98/100 on the range...... Grrrrr, I got 98/100 on the written and 95/100 on the range, no, still haven't heard the end of that ordeal. On a trip back to the range a week later, she wanted to shoot the .44 mag on the range, several others shooting also. Two gentlemen next to us were shooting a 9, their response when they saw her getting ready to shake things apart, "Hey, look at this gal, bet it knocks her goofy!" Well, 4 rounds later, they saw she's had all 4 rounds in the X ring, now, these are full house factory rounds, 240 gr. too, they pulled the mag out of their piece and left. LOL I try to behave around the house since then.

Good for you, Gouranga!!!!

It's so nice when your spouse or girlfriend has the same interest as you!

We've been married 48 years and the wife just took an interest in guns this spring when she finally tried to shoot my P-11 and said "Hey, this is FUN!!!!

Now she has two handguns of her own, A Ruger SP101 stainless .357 and a stainless Mark III. She has better guns than I do!

Also, she's ordered rosewood grips for both of them! Really taking an interest.

I'm happy for you Bro!

My first purchase for my wife was a Bersa .380. I showed her how to use...but she's never fired it:confused:. The funny thing is that my 9 year old girl ended up with it. Then last week, she told me that she wanted a Beretta or Glock. She's a real sucker for Italian stuff and brand names. Yey, another new gun for me:p. Since I didn't have any money, I traded it in my Ruger LCR and Taurus 24/7OSS yesterday for a brand new Glock 19. (I got $90 back):D. Now I just have to get her out to shoot it.

Thats very cool, When we where dating she made it a point to try all mine, right up to and including the .44 mag, she kinda settled on the .22 mag as Hers, its all good, good luck, just hope she doesn't turn out to be the better shot!!!

Get her to start with a 22 pistol
A good idea, or at least something heavier.
Not to knock the KT P11, but it isn't a casual shooting or beginner's perfect gun. Get her shooting and enjoying it, and then get her comfortable with the P11, and you'll have her bothering you to go to the range and/or going on her own shortly.

Very cool indeed...I'm hoping my wife, after she gives birth to our little bun in the oven, gets the bug to go out and get her CCW. She's shot before and has had a training session with a retired LEO that we know.

Take her to a range & rent a couple of guns before firing the p11

22 & a 38spc. summtin not as snappy as the p11.

on the other hand if she starts with the p11 she won`t have nuttin to compare the recoil to !!!

My wife is the better handgun shooter , especially with her Taurus 85.

2A all the way !!!!

As a followup to this, my wife easily passed her CCW qualification, doing better than I did on mine.

She is waiting for her permit to come in then as I hoped, she is going shopping for a firearm that is completely her own. She likes the Kel-Tec I bought for her but wants to see what else out there might be better. So I am completely stoked on that.

As an aside, she has gotten a rush of her girlfriends who now are wanting to go shooting with her. None of them has ever fired a weapon in their lives but it is like having another friend who is picking one up inspires them to. My wife is actually pushing me to get a yearly membership in the local range. She is pretty compelling pro-2a for her buds. Growing up afraid of firearms, and never really wanting to touch them, she strikes a chord with a lot of ladies she knows who have been the same.

She never does cease to amaze me. First being insane enough to marry me and stick around for a decade, having 4 kids, her dedication to serving disabled children, and now stepping completely out of her comfort zone and beating the crap out of one of her fears like this.

Gouranga, hope you guys have fun.

With my wife, no way no how ever. I have once asked if she wanted to qualify with a .38 at the range-no way. Never will happen ever. That I'm absolutely sure of it.

Now that is awesome! Great work! I was a little aprehensive when I read that she was intimidated, and that her first gun is a Keltec P11. I was also thinking "start with a 22", but I'm glad it turned out so great. If she finds something she likes better than the P11 (revolver or auto), she can always trade the P11 for a 22 similar to her chosen carry gun.

What I was surprised by she actually liked the recoil and feel of the P11 over my M&P 40fs. To me the M&P is much more comfortable to shoot. She does want to keep the P11. Just would like to look at others now that she has gotten some experience with a few weapons, and knows what she likes, does not like.

I was also glad she did so well with the training we did in the house with snapcaps. From some postings I saw on here with the P11 I got the expectation it would jam a few times on the first 50 rounds. Which happened. I trained her beforehand to expect them, and how to manage them. She cleared them without issue and without violating any safety rules. I have taken a couple new shooters who sweep the line the first time they get a jam, or try to look down the barrel or something. She kept the gun pointed downrange, removed the magazine, cleared the jam, and went on with her business.

Unfortunately, I recently inherited a 22 over the holidays, but it is a Jennings which I am seeing some horrific reviews of on here.

Maybe she read or heard a story that made her change her mind. If there was a violent crime in your part of town, many women would rethink their attitude.
