So here's the story. I currently own a Henry Golden Boy (lever, tube magazine) and love it. I'd really like to add a bolt action rifle to my collection, preferably with a scope. I'm looking at a couple Marlin models. Then I remembered Marlin has a .357 rifle. I'd really like one, but its a lever gun and I really want a bolt.

Does a bolt action .357 for less than $500 exist?

If not, can you suggest a good bolt action .22? I'd prefer a bottom removable magazine fed, but tube is ok too.

I can't think of any bolt actions that are chambered in pistol cartridges. I guess you could have one made but that would be pretty costly. It would entail a lot more than just rechambering. You would have to get the magazine resized, feed ramp redone, all kinds of things. As far as going to a bolt .22, there are tons out there. I would go with the Savage Mark II classic. Very nice little rifle for around $550. It has the accutrigger and a very smooth bolt. Really good little rifle for practice. Or you could go with the Mark II f for about half that price. Still has the accutrigger but not as nice looking or feeling. The Classic has the 24 inch barrel and feels a bit more like a center fire as far as hold so is much better for practice off hand shooting.

Here is a site for savage rim fire models if you want to look for yourself

You can get left handed bolt actions, but the number available are much more limited. A bolt action can be much lighter, or much heavier than a lever action. It depends on how they are set up and what caliber they are in. Generally semi autos in calibers suitable for hunting large game are much heavier than bolt or lever actions.

What are you going to use it for, small game, large game, serious target shooting, or plinking?

I have a Marlin 25MN Bolt Action .22 mag. that I got from Wally World. It has a bottom magazine and I have an extra for it.

It's the most accurate rifle I've ever had.

The next best is a Marlin Model 60 semi auto .22.

I still have both. I think the Marlin .22 mag. out today is a different model number.

If you have your heart set on a center fire bolt, you can't beat a Remington Model 700.

Centerfires are sexy, but owning a good .22 will do a lot for your marksmanship. I'm partial to Marlins for a bolt gun, or the Ruger 10/22 for a semi-auto. Easier on the wallet, too, both to buy and to shoot.

If you are insisting on a 357 take a look at the H&R single shot rifles . they have them in 357 , 44mag, and 45 colt.

For the price of ammo vs. .357 and the fact that you've already got a nice lever action (in .22 lr?) I'd vote for a .223 Rem. that moves you up to centerfire without breaking the bank. The problem with most .22 lr rifles is that manufacturers insist on making them child sized. I own a Marlin 25N (not the MN mag.) and it IS a full sized rifle as are a few others out there but other offerings tend to stretch the budget a bit.

As an example I owned a Ruger 77/22 that cost as much as a Rem. 1100 12ga purchased the same year. Nice but spendy. The Marlin was a sub $90 hairsplitter for 1/4th the price.

CZ in either rimfire or centerfire, Savage, Remington, Marlin. Base it on price and features important to you rather than which has a reputation on the Internet for being the most accurate. That is always subject to shooter and the tale being told.

I'd be looking for an older Remington 513 Match Master bolt action .22 LR. It is full sized, many came with military Tight Slings, takes a bottom feed magazine, match grade peep sights, and is more accurate that 99% of the shooters out there. There are also some Kimbers that came off the training lines from the US Military. Either of these should be doable at around the $400 mark in good condition.

Possibly one of the best .22 LR bolts ever made in the US was the Winchester model 52. You MIGHT be able to turn up one for that kind of money?

If not, a later model Remington 40X might do well?

Mossberg made some nice .22's as have most other manufacturers. Be looking around the used racks and drop by a few gun shows. See what feels right on the shoulder :)
