what are the ingredients of Gaston Glock's success?

1. striker fired pre-cocked DAO
-simple manual of arms makes it desirable for police and military. not so great is the "pull the trigger" disassembly which is a flaw in it's manual of arms that gives the S&W M&P a good niche to exploit.

2. modified Browning locked breach
-it's a strong action suited to a variety of powerful chamberings. the barrel locks with the slide at the big ejection port. simple to machine, strong and reliable. The easy feeding loose chamber is also something Glocks have in common with the AK.

3. polymer frame and stamped parts
-high start up costs for the equipment but production costs are very low.
it is arguable that glock could have lower costs with a stamped slide like the early ugly Sig-Sauer but now CNC costs are much lower. cast parts are also very common now.

I wouldn't have to hear from Glock fan-boys how great they are all the time.

Oh...did you hear how awesome the fourth gen Glocks are! Oh man...koolaid time!

I love Glocks, but I know they aren't the only good brand. I do feel the need to make their awesomeness known from time to time, just to help others.

I've done just fine without Glocks in my life. So nothing would change for me.

Then all other new polymer pistols would follow H&K's pricing scheme.

If Glocks didn't exist we'd all still be debating if an semi-auto can ever be as dependable as a revolver. Love them or hate them, Glock raised the bar on reliability.

I think this question compares to "What if Henry Ford had never invented the Model T?" others would have made cars with the same mindset.

We would probably pay a lot more for hand guns. Love them or hate them Glocks are pretty inexpensive and such a large part of the market they make all other manufacturers keep prices down.

Rugers, P-90's, P-95's, P-345's and P-97's or any P series pistol for that matter.

That was my first thought as well, as they along with other designs were created or modified to compete with Glock.

Without a doubt, it is the Springfield XD. In my opinion, and for me, the XD is better than the Glock on the singular virtue that I can shoot both well, both are stone reliable, but the XD fits my hand better and that is what the one mitigating difference was when I bought both of my XD's. The feel of the grip. The shape and angle of grip put the XD over. But, as I said, both are stellar guns. In Bizzaro-world where Glock didn't exist, XD would be it.

Beretta 92's

Steyr M series. They are already like a glock but "better". I have a couple glocks and a Steyr M9 and the Steyr compares very favorably to the G19 IMHO.

The hammered M-9 on my hip right now, that malfunctions frequently, doesn't make me want to put it up there to the ruggedness, reliability, and lifespan of a Glock.

For the gun world, smith m&p and xd would rule the world for polymer striker fired.

For me personally, I would miss my glocks, but I would suck it up and either carry the SP101 full time (I carry it as primary part time now as it is), or I would go with a colt defender for 45 and either a sig p6/239 or an hk for my 9mm needs. Or heck, maybe go full on revolver and pick a 686 or go for one of those fancy 7-8 round jobs in a wheel.

I'd still get a M&P...

For me it would be the following:

M&P - melonite finish, fully supported barrel, stainless steel chasis reinforces frame, all stainless parts (more rust resistant than carbon steel, but a little weaker). Reliable, low recoil, low muzzle flip, great ergos.

Glock - tenifer finish, barrel not fully supported, frame is not reinforced, carbon steel parts (stronger than stainless, treated with tenifer). Reliable, marginal ergos. Recoil and muzzle flip more than the M&P.

Beretta 92 series - bruniton finish, barrel not fully supported, aluminum frame (not as prone to KB, but expected life on average around 30,000). Extremely reliable, recoil and muzzle flip low.

You really think M&Ps and XDs would have ever existed if Glock had not shown the way? I don't. For better or worse Glock changed the way people think of hand guns. I think S&W would have been the big winner with the 3d generation autos. They were well on the way to owning police sales when Glock emerged and they were pretty good inexpensive guns. M9s and Sigs were costing quite a bit more at the time and not really competing with Glock for sales at first.

^^yep. Polymer pistols existed before Glock. Glock was the one so good everyone had to work for decades to match it.
