Unrealistic zombie rifle expectations?

Remington pump action mag feed in 308.
That's a nice one too. I like the .308. Slightly heavier and doesn't collapse, but still a fine rifle; especially when you fit it with bigger clips.

AR and AK crowds have a point. That said, I suspect in The Total Breakdown of Civilization™ if you're going to be worried about replaceable parts, spare guns won't exactly be in short supply either... Right? Since they're just lying around for you to grab at? cwutididthere?

Either you have a bunch of guns lying around for parts or you don't, and if you do, there is then less emphasis to have yours specifically match those since you can just pick them up like the daisies they apparently are. Model then becomes less important than ammo availability. Again, if your gun is so common and interchangeable for parts that it's everywhere, why does it matter again save the ammunition it accepts? That's a rhetorical question btw. Of course, then you can start arguing degrees of civilization collapse, but it really boils down to this: Either you can find the parts-- and more than likely a working gun to replace your busted one --or you can't. I love my gun too, but if it's that broke, the one you stumbled across should work just fine unless that firearm just has utility that can't be replaced... By a gun so apparently so similar that you need it for parts :\

I agree with a couple others, your SHTF rifle needs to be in common caliber, like 5.56 or 7.62 NATO, 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r for commie guns. I really think you are making a mistake ruling out 5.56, but it sounds like something in 7.62 NATO would fit the bill of your criteria. How "evil black rifle" you want to go w/ your choice is up to you with some good choices across the spectrum there...

Something like .450 bushmaster or some other relatively exotic caliber is a horrible choice IMO. Too expensive to stock up on ammo now if nothing else.

Throwing all seriousness to the side something easily suppressed would be a major plus in The Zombie Apocalypse. Read the Day by Day Armageddon books (http://www.jlbourne.com/) if you dig thinking about that topic by the way. Great pair of books IMO.

How many zombies do you guys run into on a regular basis? Next to mall ninjitis zombie dread is right up there with the all time biggest internet geek of the decade award.
