I have a friend who has been quite knowing in the past about rifles. I purchased a nice K31 recently that locks up nice in the bolt and shoots as accurately as anything I have ever shot but he says it is unsafe because of the straight back bolt type action which has injured or killed several shooters. I have visited many websites and read about K31s and never saw any reports of any problems involving injury from a bolt failure. Has anyone seen or known of any problem with this rifle?

I think Al is spot on. The K31 is a very safe action and in many respects represents that ultimate straight-pull design. It has dual locking lugs that lock up in the front and has the strongest of Swiss actions.

He could also be confusing it with the Lee Navy.

I have 3 K-31s and they are my favorite mil surps.

there are films on you-tube where you see experienced k31 shooters slamming the bolt knob a second time after they close it to make shureit is firmly shut.
Never heard of any problem and in view of the several millions of rifles I suppose the swiss have build and shot, it would have been known alover the world.

have fun

The only thing like that I've heard of is the little lug that rotates the bolt sleeve when the operating rod is pushed or pulled had a tendency to crack and break off on certain WWII vintage rifles. Swissrifles.com has a good thread on it, and the general consensus is that the Swiss armorers were aware of the problem and likely replaced most of the operating rods during post war re-arsenal. Good thing to inspect regularly though.

Other than that, I'd say your friend has an over active and not very physically accurate imagination. Pay close attention and see if he calls it a Swede too :D:D:D

They are quite safe, they will not fire out of battery.

Test it out sometime, close the bolt but not all the way, leave it back a bit, when you pull the trigger the firing pin will force it into battery.

Those Swiss are pretty smart.:D

That's cause if the action is not fully seated it beats the heck out of everything when the firing pin comes forward and seats it. Since they are pretty slick its not hard to leave it slightly out of battery.

The best way to work a Swiss straight pull rifle is "vigorously". Ie don't baby it, its not going to break. Its like slamming the mag home on a 1911, do it like you mean it.

Hatterasguy, just did your test and the swiss are really smart. Question I have now is if there is a live round in the chamber would it fire or would the firing pin be retracted from the force of closing the bolt?
