Often... in self-defense classes...there are words of wisdom distilled into memorable "one-liners" (one sentence or one word). Such as:

1. "Watch the hands, hands kill."
2. "Proximity negates skill".
3. "Shot placement is king."

Etc.

Do you guys have more to add to this list?

2 words for pro-active defense:

"Drop It ! ! ! " {Add appropriate favorite epithet for effect.}
Single word: "HIGH--yah!!

1) "Don't borrow trouble, the payments are higher than you think."

2) "Don't look for trouble, or you'll find it."

3) "Truth is stranger than fiction."

4)" Never underestimate the ability of some goober you went out of your way
to help to royally stick it to you.

5) "No good deed ever goes unpunished."

6) "Discretion is the better part of Valor."

7) "Minimizing danger is very low cost."

I know everybody wants to get all confrontational when it comes to S & T,
but IMO, many times avoiding a conflict is better than winning it.

My favorite is the "Plus 1 Rule".

Whatever you see, plus 1.

If you see two Violent Criminal Actors, assume there's a third somewhere closeby you haven't seen. If you find a third partner, assume a forth . . . and so on.

Likewise, if your attacker shows a weapon, assume he has another someplace on him.

one liners or cliches

Block the weapon first, take out the man next and always (the man is the real threat not the weapon).

Run from a knife, crowd a gun. (I think Lee Marvin saif his dad taught him that.)

Sometimes you can kick or run
faster than pulling a knife or drawing a gun.

An old man who can't run or make a fist due to arthritis
may try kill you rather than try to fight you.

Better judged by twelve than carried by six.

Don't worry about the bullet with your name on it. Worry about the one that says "to whom it may concern."

Never bring a knife to a gun fight.
I have to ask: Was this really something you heard at a self-defense class?..I know it is a very popular witticism

I've heard it myself many times, but never from a knowledgeable instructor...usually in a gun store...I'm just curious it this is actually being taught.

I'm asking because of the current thread on the effectiveness of a knife in CQB as opposed to a gun and the number of times it has been brought up

This one is a little cold, but I think it goes to situational awareness and general readiness...

"Be polite to everyone you meet, but have a plan to kill everyone in the room."

I know the discussion is about popular "one liners," not necessarily their validity, but ...

Agreed. Provided the knife wielder is close enough to touch you with it, a knife - even one not specifically designed to be a weapon, e.g., a box cutter or even a penknife - can inflict devastating wounds. It is not an intermediate level of force between bare hands and a gun.

I took self defense as an elective in college, our instructor assured us that if you're ever tangled up with someone that's got a knife, you're going to get cut. If you ever have to get physical with someone, just remember: eyes, ears, nose, throat.

And to contribute to the one liners: "You're no daisy"

Not from a class, but from Scattergun Bob on TFL, "The best gunfight that ever was, was the one that never happened...".

How 'bout a 3-liner?

Your goal is to never pull your weapon.
Having failed that, your goal is to never pull the trigger.
Having failed that, your goal is to NOT miss... :D

Clint Smith is very good at these. Read 'em and, if not weep, at least chuckle...

While generally nowhere near as pithy as CS-a die hard gun guy if ever one was-it's still worth a quick click to see which hollywierd celebs fall on the thinking side of the line:

And, finally, while these are more complex than 'one liners', this link is both a good, quick read-and a reminder of why I instinctively liked Insight's Greg Hamilton the first moment I met him:
