How did you learn about THR?

It's been a loooong time now. Somehow or another, I wound up on the Warrifles forum. Someone over there posted a link to this forum, and I haven't been back to that one since. This is the place for me, thank you very much.

I stick around because there's a lot of rather well-informed folks. Doesn't much matter whatcha wanna know, someone around here can steer you in the right direction. And I enjoy the lack of getting cussed out over stuff.

I like it here. :)

I found THR by accident some years ago while looking up some info on the internet in a search. I find it sometimes interesting and sometimes boring.....like when they try to explain exactly how the transporter works to beam up Scotty in a Star Trek book.. Just to much pretty useless information and I kind of went my seperate way .
But maybe somebody out there needs this information. I just know its boring as hell to me. Maybe I will last longer this time. Maybe not.
I will say this the best forum I have found. Most are pretty unbearable.

I found THR via Google while looking for gun info. I bounced between TFL and THR at first, but eventually settled on THR.

I've stayed away from THR during the recent unpleasantness. But since that has now been resolved, I suppose I'll wander on back and continue the .45ACP vs 9mm debate.

I was linked here from google after multiple firearms questions. I find the mods, people and information available to be of a higher level than other forums

Google or Bing...can't remember which.

Stayed due to the politeness of the members, good moderation, knowledgeable staff and members, no reputation point-games-they seem childish and can be used vindictively when people are just trying to find genuine answers without censure.

I came and checked it out when I realized that Tuner was a mod here and posted now and then. I'm in to 1911's and his knowledge about them is legendary.

Like a lot of others have already stated, the way it's moderated is a big factor for me. I'm a member of quite a few forums and THR is right up there with a few select. It's in a league of it's own regarding the amount of experienced firearm enthusiasts and all that I've had the pleasure of meeting here have been great. There seems to be very little childish behavior here as opposed to some other sites. Users are extremely polite. Not only is it very informative, it's fun and entertaining to boot.

How did I find THR? I specifically searched for "gun forums" a while back.

Initially found it by internet search when researching some firearms related stuff. Decided to stay because there is a lot of good collective knowledge here.

...how did you find The High Road?
What was that first event that led you here...
I had an issue with a .22 rifle that I couldn't figure out. I went to Google and searched for something, anything on the subject. I eventually typed in the words "Savage 187R problems", and one of the top results was the following thread...

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=44763

I sort of figured out how the forum worked and I kept searching through some of the topics. I then just signed up and made my first post ever about that very rifle...

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=304217

I got that rifle running and I stayed around here to learn more.
...why did you decide to stay?
My join date was at a time in my life when my interest in firearms was swelling greatly. Once I came across the forum and figured out how to utilize the information here, the learning couldn't be stopped. I had to know more and more about anything and everything. I joined right about the same time as rcmodel did, although he is a billion times more active here than I am. Anyone remember back when he used an avatar signature? :D I do.

what draws you to THR over other forums? Why do prefer to spend time here vs. other places?
...what makes THR special.
The ever-striving attempts toward civility, combined with the absolute unrivaled level of knowledge. There are some members here whose wisdom is priceless. The four Jims: Watson, March, Jim V and Keenan. Old Fuff, 1911Tuner, ArfinGreebly, 9mmepiphany, rcmodel, Walkalong, Lee Lapin, Dave McCracken, Ranb, jmorris, Zak Smith, NavyLT, TexasRifleman, JohnBT, Bart Roberts, taliv, Vern Humphrey, JohnKSa, exbiologist, Armed Bear, Jeff White, dogtown tom, KingCreek, possum, Deanimator, General Geoff, David E, divemedic, RockyMtnTactical, Azizza, Zerodefect, Z-Michigan, nalioth, MCgunner, Guillermo, Radagast... I could go on forever.

Other places don't have all these guys. Plus, every time I come up with a question, a quick search here seems to find an answer. I know that some of the wise members here also frequent other forums, but I don't know any other forum that has as many active members as this one does. Not only are there high quality members here, there is a high quantity of them too. That also makes a difference.

I don't remember how I found this place. Received some good advice in the beginning and like the generally non-confrontational pro-2A stance.

Research. Always kept stumbling across the site and almost always had useful information.

I found THR through google searches while doing research on firearms. I liked the higher level of discourse and general firearms knowledge. I am a member of gunboards primarily for their superior Makarov forum. I visited TFL a lot but never joined. Don't visit much anymore, but still like their "real carry stories" type of threads better, I wish the mods wouldn't be so hard on such threads here. Maybe just delete offending posts rather than shutting the whole thread down?

Specifically, how did you find The High Road?
Google is awesome!

What was that first event that led you here, and why did you decide to stay?
Took a 10+ year hiatus from shooting sports. Decided 10+ years was long enough and bought me a Taurus PT1911. Had problems with the thing so I Googled for help. I stick around because this is one of the few online gun forums where people are generally civil toward each other.

met a moderator back here years ago like the summer of 2001 and later learned about this site. that moderator moved in when we were going threw some tough times in our lifes and we shot together and travelled a little together and he became a good friends. he started working over seas alot and has since stopped being a moderator here.

Tried to get ahold of him for awhile and just thought he did not want to get ahold of me and talk anymore but finally contacted him late in 2010 and he asked what was my problem and why I would not contact him and it actually turned out that a person who I thought was a friend was actually a back stabber who never told each other we needed to get contact infomation to each other.

I have met many good friends threw this site and some I would not piss on if they were on fire but they do not count as this is a first class talk forum and I hope it continues to get better and better.

Several years ago after recovering somewhat from a protracted illness, I went looking for one Dave McC after losing track of him when the old Gun Spot forum shut down. Dave had been a regular participant in the Shotgun forum there, which was expertly moderated by Randy Cain. I asked around in a couple of other firearms- related fora and someone told me Dave was moderating the shotgun forum at THR, so I signed up here.

A friend turned me on to TheFiringLine. I migrated over to THR when Oleg posted his invitation.

I have stayed for several reasons.
  • There are still quite a few TFL "old timers" here.
  • I like the general firearms emphasis; I'm on several forums that specialize on one brand or one state (i.e., pafoa.org) but really prefer the broader perspective here.
  • I like the high volume of interaction here, which no doubt results from the general firearms emphasis.
  • I like the civility here, including the "Art's grammaw rule."
  • These forums are moderated better than most. As a consequence, fairly high signal-to-noise ratio.
I still drop in on TFL now that it's up and running again, but THR is my primary haunt. It feels like my local pub, and I'm quite happy here.

I bought a S&W .38 special for my grandfather and was looking for a site to upload pictures to get more info on it, this was the first 'legit' site I found. I came back two more times for other firearms research before I started becoming a regular reader :)

Every time I would do a search for a gun related question, 9 times out of 10 THR was where I found the answer. After a few years of lurking every time I had a question, I finally decided to become a member. I stay because the overall attitude is very positive, and even when it isnt, some of the more spirited threads are amusing to follow along.

I started on The Firing Line, posting little and reading a lot. Which is, I think, the best thing a youngster can do to learn stuff. Then I, I don't know, got bored with it? Not bored with guns, just bored with going there. I had known of THR through there some time ago. And I probably was searching something gun-related that linked me to a topic here on it and decided to sign up. Great bunch of guys, and I've learned a lot.
