"Ballistol" gun cleaner and lube

I've been using Balistol for many years but I don't mix it with water.I use it full strength on knives,guns,leather goods,etc.Smells kind of strange but I got past that.Good luck.tom.

Mix with water if you're cleaning blackpowder or corrosive ammo- otherwise use it straight. Good stuff.

Well it smells better than hoppes if you ask me. Its good for steel, leather & wood. An old friend told me it was invented by a German many decades ago as a one stop cleaner,lube,preservative.

Ive used it full strength to lube my AR and a CZ PCR. Seems to lube well and to make cleaning up easier after firing. Mixed it with water for BP and used as lube, same, cleans BP better than anything else ive tried.

I dont know about its corrosion protection though.

I am sure it is still great stuff. I would like to find a place to buy some here in Austin. I like to have a variety of products when one might have trouble with one applications or another. There are better lubes today but for a cleaner I think it might beat WD-40 by a good margin since its a little thicker than WD. Me thinks the majority of it is mineral oil but it has indeed been used for a long time especially by BP folks. Some like it because its somehow eco friendly/not petro- chemical but that is horse hockey- mineral oil is a petroleum product itself

I don't clean with Ballistol (I mostly shoot BP, clean with Simple Green), but swear by it as a post-cleaning preservative and lubricant.

I've used only in full strength as far as I know. I like it. I personally wouldn't cut it.

Ballistic oil

Ballistol stands for ballistic oil as I was informed.
It was invented in Germany about 100 years ago and I have used it since I found it.
I am VERY happy with it and it has many uses and you should look up the stuff on the web.
They have ALL the information you could ask for,and I have not seen a negative comment yet.

Yes, it works miracles on locks, I suppose it only makes sense it would work in large part for guns...

Susposedly it is non-toxic and can even be ingested or something similair .My brother swears by it . It can be used with water and still make water repell . Its weird but works .

I heard it is made from coal. Coal oil.

I trust hickock to recommend good stuff... I'd buy some if I could find it around here. Does anyone have anything negative to say about the stuff?

Nagant: Not gun related, but I originally bought it at the 3rd key maker (the first true locksmith I found) that was able to craft a key to fit the mangled, old locks on my motorcycle. I mostly used it as a de-icer, as I liked to stash them everywhere, even taped up under the car, in case I got iced out. Heck, I even stashed an ice scraper under the car most of the time. (I used to live in northern NY).

Ever since I moved in here in TX, the lock on the roll-up door had been near impossible to even get a key in, much less turn, so I always used the walk-in door. One night, not being able to sleep, I grabbed a beer, and went to fix the recently stubborn locks on my bikes. Just a few squirts in everything from the ignition switches, helmet locks, and hard bag locks got everything working like a charm again. On my second beer, I decided to try the lock in the roll-up door, and after a *few* sprays, it works a slick as ever. Next time I shoot my Neos I'll give it a shot.

So yep, it is darn good. Doesn't smell too bad, either, and given some of the nasty de-icers/lubes I've used, that is a real good thing.

::EDIT:: I like the self-charging "olive oil sprayer", it could work well for things like Marvel Mystery Oil, and some of the penetrating oils I use.

I use it full strength. I switched to it to avoid using more toxic lubes.

I use it also and like it very much. Full strength for me as well. I think you cut it with water for black powder.

May need to find some, sounds like an interesting substance.


How much is it compared to Breakfree?

I use it mixed as 'moosemilk' (1 part ballistol to 7 parts water) for cleaning my Tokarev (corrosive ammo) and black powder guns. The water evaporates off and leaves the oil behind. No rust ever. I use it straight for lubing just about everything else. It's as handy as a pocket on a shirt.

I recently had a gun reblued. The smith recommended that I use Ballistol to polish it daily to stop the rusting process. After about 4 weeks, it has just about finished and turned out with a glossy, mirror-like shine.

I can see those eggs and sausage frying over the campfire now ..

I corresponded briefly with their rep a couple of years back, and this stuff is on my "to try" list.

Of particular interest to me is that it is non-toxic, and can be universally applied to metal and wood as a protectant. All three greatly simplifying gun care especially in the field.

I don´t like it. I noticed dry residues in a gun that i didn´t use for a long term and i can´t stand the smell of it. I prefer WD40 for cleaning.

It's sold thru AMAZON.COM among other sources.

I have been looking for that stuff locally since I saw he recommended and used it in a video he did.
