I'm thinking about finally getting a 223. I prefer bolt guns with straight comb stocks, or at least minimal drop. It'll be scoped. I'd like to shoot the heavier rounds like 70 grain Prvi Match. I'd also like a detachable box magazine. Would prefer real wood stock, but a decent synthetic is OK too. Was looking at TIKKA Varmint and that's OK, but wanted to shed a lb or two, yet retain the 5 round magazine.

Any recommendations out there?

A couple of days ago I posted a message in the Gunsmithing forum about a new Remington 700VTR that locked up on the 4th round that the owner attempted to load in it. I don't know what went wrong but I know which gun I wouldn't buy, at least until I had a GOOD answer as to what happened.

Quite a few .223 Rem bolt-actions use a 1-12 twist that may not stabilize heavier bullets. You probably should have a 1-9 or faster twist for those bullets.

Yeah, looks like I'll be doing the Savage model 25 as it has 1:9 twist stock :)

Also looked at the CZ and it seems to have 1:9 too :)

Not sure about the Tikka - I think they only offer 1:12 :(

I have a Savage 12FV in .223
Nice bench shooter--very accurate
I would not care to lug this around in the field--too heavy for my taste.
Trigger set at 1 1/2 #--nice
6-24 scope

Savage model 25 seems to be right around 7.5# with laminated stock. Add a 1# scope and I'm OK. The bigger Savages weigh more. But we're still looking :)

Tikka offers both 1:12 and 1:8 twist for .223, at least in the Hunter and Varmint models.

I think the T3 Lite comes with 1:8. That would fit your bullet range.

I have shot their bolt action .223 Carbine and it was a great experience.

You may do what you wish but here is my suggestion anyway. Get a Stevens 200 try it with your ammo choice, if it does not shoot the heavy bullets then look into Barnes X bullets. If that is not your preference try sending it to er shaw and have them swap the barrel for one with a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist. Both timney and riflebasix make excellent triggers for the stevens. Good luck!

I'd go with the Tikka lite 1:8 twist. I own a 308Win varmint; smoothest bolt i've ever tied! Sub-MOA accuracy.

From the Tikka owners manual:
T3 Hunter / Laminated 3.1 kg (6 13/16 lbs)
T3 Mag Hunter / Laminated 3.2 kg (7 lbs)
T3 Battue 3.0 kg (6 5/8 lbs)
T3 Lite / Lite Stainless 2.8 kg (6 3/16 lbs)
T3 Mag Lite / Lite Stainless 2.9 kg (6 3/8 lbs)
T3 Varmint 3.6 kg (8 lbs)

My next bolt gun will be in 223, and it will be a Tikka Lightweight Stainless with a 1:8" barrel. I have a Varmint T3 with a 1:8" barrel and it'll flat shoot any cheap-crap ammo into some amazing groups.

You can make a 1:9 twist work with most 70-75 grain bullets but not all of them. Therefore you don't really NEED a 1:8 twist or the one-length-fits-all action of a Tikka.

Having a .223 with a magnum length action is pretty silly in my book.
