I'm picking up an IPhone 4 case and in the market for a case. Anything cool out there?

Barely firearm related but I do use a ballistics calculator on mine so I guess it's sort of range equipment for some.

The only case I have seen that seems like it can take a real beating outside is the OtterBox Defender.

It's overpriced, way too bulky, but strong and rubber padded with a screen protector.

I hate the word "tacticool" though :)

I bring my Ipod with me to the range and the Iphone 4 won't be any different. Its nice to have a ballistics calc. and a shooting timer easy availible. I just like all my gear to match I guess.:D

I don't care what anyone says (not fussing opinions, just expressing my own) the otter box as proven itself to me over and over again, I'm a firefighter and it goes with me most places except for in the beast, so it has my regards as toughest out there

a quick google search revealed that magpul makes one:

It's for the iPhone 3/3GS, not the iPhone 4.

Both Otterbox and Ballistic make cases which offer a high degree of protection, the highest being Otterbox’s “Defender” series and Ballistic’s “HC” series. Both companies make cases for a variety of smart phones, including the iPhone4.

➢ Otterbox “Defender” series: these cases have 3 parts: a shell into which the phone is inserted, a cover which fits over the front of the phone, and a silicone outer case into which the covered phone is inserted. In addition there is a ratcheted holster into which the encased phone snaps. Although the phone can probably be used with just the inner case, the addition of the outer case helps hold the inner case together and adds substantially to the ability of the case to protect the phone. The iPhone 4 cases are available in black, red, and blue (very close to Dillon blue, which could be the deciding factor for some of us :D).

➢ Ballistic “HC” series: like the Otterbox, this case has a shell into which the phone is inserted, a cover that fits over the front of the phone, and a silicone outer case into which the covered phone is inserted. It also has a ratcheted holster into which the encased phone is snapped. The iPhone 4 can definitely be used with just the inner case, but as with the Otterbox, the outer case adds to the structural integrity of the assembly and adds substantially to the ability of the case to protect the phone. Colors available for the iPhone 4 are black/black, black/grey, and black/Pepto Bismol pink.

➢ Otterbox “Defender” vs. Ballistic “HC”: Neither of these cases is small; for an iPhone 4, the measurements (to the nearest 1/16”) are:

o Naked iPhone 4: 4-1/2” H x 2-5/16” W x 3/8” thick (as measured by me);
o iPhone 4 in Otterbox “Defender” case: 4.85” x 2.67” x 0.66” (according to Otterbox);
o iPhone 4 in Ballistic “HC” inner case: 4-7/8” x 2-3/4” x 5/8” (as measured by me);
o iPhone 4 in Ballistic “HC” complete case: 5” x 2-7/8” x 3/4” (as measured by me).

For iPhone 4 users either would serve you well. Aesthetically, I think the Otterbox has a more “finished” look.

Ballistic has posted several videos on YouTube showing Ballistic-encased iPhones being dropped onto pavement from 25 feet, thrown against a wall, dragged behind a truck across a parking lot, etc. Those videos are pretty impressive and made my choice an easy one. If you’re in the market for a tough case, I strongly recommend that you check these videos out.

Some people have noted a watermark or oiling effect between the clear cover of both the Ballistic case and the Otterbox case and the iPhone screen. I inserted my iPhone into the Ballistic case with the original protective plastic on the front and back of the iPhone intact (other than cutting away areas for the camera lens, etc.) and have noticed no watermark or oiling effect. And yes, the touch screen works just fine. I imagine this would work with the Otterbox as well.

Either case improves the feel of the phone and makes it much less slippery and less likely to slip out of a shirt pocket. Pricewise there is nothing to choose from as each case costs $49.99.

Standard disclaimer: I have no connection with any of the companies listed.

hmm i went a different route than you guys
i have a casemate fuel max and an otterbox 2600
tactical =the extra 2000 mah (this figure is a lil overstated by the manufacturer) battery life comes in handy when you are bugged out and cant get to a charger
the 2600 is waterproof but its huge and you cant talk on phone while its in the case without bluetooth but you can still play angry birds

I got an email from Magpul saying that they are finally shipping more iPhone cases and that they made a new one for the 4 too.

But from what I have read, it's a crappy case anyways and does not give much added protection. The otter box really is your best bet out there for the 3GS. The 4 however has a few other options like the AFG ballistic case. I like the look of it better than the otter box.

This is the one I want to get for mine. It is a little pricey at $100.00 with the carbon fiber back plate.

The Vapor is a CNC machined aluminum bumper that installs on the sides of the iPhone 4. The bumper is available in a variety of colors by anodizing the aluminum. The interior is lined with an absorbing material which not only reduces the g-forces of an impact, but helps create a non-conductive barrier to minimize reception issues.The package includes an option for real carbon fiber which simply adheres to the back of your iPhone. Since aluminum and carbon fiber are very light-weight/strong materials, they go hand-in-hand with each other.

That looks really cool, and I found their web site, but I am pretty skeptical about using a thin layer of shock absorbing material inside the case. I have the Defender on mine to absorb those hits when I drop it on the floor of the truck, it bounces off the dash, falls off the counter, falls out of my pocket onto concrete, etc.

Or you can just go right to Magpul's website and order them for either the 3GS or the 4. The 4 only comes in black though. I just bought one FDE and one OD for my 3GS.

Well I just got two of the magpul one's and while I don't think it is going to offer much protection for the screen in the event of a drop they sure look cool and match all of my FDE and OD mags perfect.
