My permit will be coming through within the next month and I have actively been looking for my first purchase. My first choice was going to be a 1911, but the prices around here are insane so I thought I'd pick up something else and wait for the right 1911 deal to come along. I was cruizing gunbroker and came across the Taurus PT 92 CS and fell in love. This is honesly one of the sexiest guns I have ever seen. Before anyone starts bashing me, this will not be for CC and I am not a fan of plastic guns. I like my guns to be made of metal and wood. So, any personal experience with this model? Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks

Never shot one, but have heard Taurus makes them in a factory previously owned and operated by Berretta. There have been a few enhancements made (which I cannot recall). It's a better 92FS for less money. Also might be the highest quality gun Taurus makes depending who you ask.

Beautiful guns. Simple as that.
To me they really are the better Beretta. One of the improvements is the ability to carry them locked and cocked, so it goes from being a DA/SA gun to a SA gun.
Now I want one again.

I have the full size version and it is very simple to use. Whenever a friend needs to use a gun at the range I hand them the PT92 because it is idiot proof. Now I did have a problem with sagging magazines with mine and Taurus was able to take care of it in 13 days. There is a wealth of knowledge about these guns on the Taurus forum, it is a company favorite it would seem. The part I am pointing to in the picture is the locking block which is your "main point of failure". I put that in quotes because people will tell you that it should be replaced or break by 20K rounds. For the most part people get more rounds through it than that, and besides call Taurus send it in it gets fixed. The picture of the barrel resting on the frame is a trick I picked up on the forum to check the barrel alignment relative to the frame. I have been told that this can show you your inherent mechanical accuracy. And if it's off a good gunsmith can tighten these guns up. There are quite a few guys that are using these as race guns. I too love metal guns, but the PT92 is a fat girl. Good luck to you.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic, my friend. I was just trying to point out that what I read in L.E. publications is apparently different from what's printed in book store gun magazines. (which I don't read)

Beretta is very popular with law enforcement. But that doesn't necessarily mean the Taurus isn't a good, well made gun.

My preference for the Beretta, a known quantity to me, is certainly not meant as a personal attack on you.

The beauty of a free country is that we all have a right to express our opinions and share our experiences freely. :)

It's all good. I was asking about this particular gun. I wasn't asking if I should buy a Taurus or Beretta. I have done my research and since the Taurus is a bit cheaper i"ll be buying it. If I can find a Beretta for the same price then I would go for that.

I have yet to read a bad thing about these....anywhere.

Thanks
Adam

Adam, a lot of people are going to put Taurus down because of the price...But...I have a full size one in .40 and has been a very good gun and one of the more accurate that I own. I have experience with the beretta and the Taurus, and, to be honest...There isnt really a difference in my opinion other than the safety, and I prefer the taurus safety as its in the same place as my 1911.

It shoots well, carries well and functions well..and yes, its damn sexy...I give you a +1 on buying it...

Nice looking gun. But I'd spend the few extra dollars and get a genuine Beretta.

Why buy a "knock-off" when you can have the real thing???:uhoh:
By that logic it would be unwise to purchase any 1911 other than a Colt (and I hear people have had success doing otherwise).

Taurus quality has improved vastly in the last few years. The PT-92 is arguably one of the best guns Taurus has every produced. The one I fired was accurate and reliable. Many people prefer it to the Beretta (which it is virtually identical to) because they prefer the placement of the safety.

Also keep in mind that many manufacturers are starting to produce quality "budget 1911s". (Taurus, STI, Springfield Armory, and Rock Island Armory to name a few).

^ Never heard that one.

We must read different reports. BTW, do you know of any LE agencies that issue the Taurus?? Just curious.
Not in the States, but apparently Brazil is quite fond of them. There probably aren't many LE Agencies in the States issuing CZ-75s or Makarov's either, but those are proven designs with quite a following.

These days You'll be hard pressed to find a LE agency as well that issues .38 Revolvers. Doesn't mean they miraculously stopped working.
I find the notion that any good gun must be issued by some agency a bit of a fallacy.

Because it has been proven that the Taurus 92 models are as good if not better then the Beretta 92 models and at 50% savings many times.

I prefer the taurus because the safety is at a much better and more natural position on the frame, and offers cocked, locked or decocked. The beretta safety on the slide is a stopper for me. Unnatural and not as flexible.

That is why I have owned the Taurus versions.

As do I. Particularly when you consider how many LEO's carry something different than their standard issue weapon (assuming of course their department gives them the freedom to do so).

I had a PT92 Combat, it was an excellent pistol that ran 100% and digested every ammo I put through it. It is a long story but I ended up with an actual Beretta 92 barrel in it.... Hunterdad, I'm sure you will be very happy with the one you get, the PT92 is the best Taurus has to offer.

this was mine...

Had an old PT99 from the mid 80s for about 20 years. Wonderful gun. Many many thousands of rounds through it. Cannot recall a single problem with it. Sold it to get $$$$ to buy a gun for my wife, which she hated & we no longer have:banghead: I really wish I still had that PT99.

If you buy that Taurus, I suspect you will not be disappointed.

The Taurus PT-92 is a great gun with a proven design, quality construction, and with a more versatile safety system than that found on the Beretta Model 92. A very reliable gun that should give you many years of dependable service.

If all of their guns were as good as the 92/99 series, there wouldn't be any Taurus bashing. The 92 compares to any 9mm combat pistol made.;)

Thanks for the feedback guys. As long as I can find the compact version that's in the original post, then I will have one hopefully by the end of March.
