Sights falling off, jam-o-matic session while training and safety selector switches falling completely off - what's not to love?

This same agency also swapped out their Sig 552 rifles, proclaiming them unreliable, essentially.

And OT, but check out the sweet deals the officers get when they buy their old weapons after new duty weapons are procured- $1

ALE's pricey guns prove unreliable

Ouch. Serious though, pricey kimbers as duty guns? I like fancy guns and all, but for duty weapons, jeez, just buy Glocks or M&P's at a nice leo rate and be done with it. Could probably get 10-15 years of service out of those guns too.

So basically, all the cops got together and hatched out a totally brilliant plan. They sat round a table and decided to make up all sorts of problems with thir super trick Kimbers so they can all buy them for a Dollar! SWEET!

my tle jammed after the first round and then every other once i cleared it. same thing with my kimber eclipse...

Saw this story on another board. The take on the story over there was that--in the case of their handguns--the NC ALE operates as a sort of government-funded, members only gun collecting club for their officers. Afterall, as soon as the pistols became "obsolete" the officers had the opportunity to buy them at deeply discounted prices. That's fine in principle, but those pesky SIGs of theirs seemed to become obsolete on a nearly biannual basis.

Kimbers are junk 1911 shaped objects. The story has external extractor failure written all over it.

FWIW...

My local PD* has issued Kimber 1911s for several years. Haven't heard of any major issues. They formerly carried Beretta 96s.

* Plymouth Township, Montgomery County, PA.

Fishy to say the least. No matter what your opinion of Kimbers ( Personally own four without any problems, I carry and trust mine ) They said that the SIG 552 assault rifles are "not up to snuff ". Come on, are you kidding me. I smell a scam!!

I'm far from a Kimber defender, but I think the story has more to do with the agency's habit of making recently issued guns available to its officers at firesale prices than anything else.

Kimbers being unreliable. And this is news worthy, why?

The headline should read "Pitfalls of procurement by fan boys." More accurate reflection of what occured with NC ALE. TJ

Big friggin deal, more for me.
Anyone want to send me their fully assembled "junk" Kimber I'll pay the postage.

I guess if ya really get into a "product/brand cult" about something, you're not willing to believe anything bad about it. What a shame! :banghead:

Glad they got rid of them before one of them got an officer killed. :)

Its kind of weird that you would issue a 1911 ultra compact as a duty pistol, seems to be more of a back up gun, you would think a glock 23 example would have been a better choice.

In other words in just your local or state government in action, nothing new.

It would be great if they had laws on the books that the duty guns must be turned in and resold to the public, who paid for them in the first, if the guns are legal for public ownership.

Remember this is NC, home of NASCAR, a sport that is based in the running of illegal booze and there are still plenty of people making it I'd assume.

No offense to any LEOs here, as I consider myself a friend, albeit an objective one, but I see the road to 'self-funding' through seized booty as a recipe for abuse and disaster with the acronym of SWAG attached.

And has been said, what's with a Alcohol Enforcement Agency (what, exactly is that; a fractal of a localized version of ATF?) with Sig 552s?

Is this an agency that enforces Liquor Licenses, or runs and guns against illegal white lightning stills down on NC?

Do they also have Bradley Fighting Vehicles?

Um, yeah..... Kimber 1911 compact's as everyday duty weapons? If I was a LEO and 1911 compact's of any make were standard issue duty weapons for my department I would be disappointed to say the least.

I'd be going out to buy myself a full size Glock as my "back up gun".

I tend to think there is something fishy going on here.

There are too many whys.

Why would you choose a 1911? (I like them too but duty weapons they are not these days with Glocks, M&Ps, etc. being cheap and durable and lighter to carry)
Why would you choose a compact 1911? (that has as history of being finicky)
What kind of problems were they having and did Kimber try to sort them out for them?
Why all of the sudden 2 weapon changes so soon? (The Sig rifles and the Kimber compacts)

Those are only a few of the questions I am aasking myself at this strange situation.

I'm not a member of any product cult, and don't own a Kimber yet - but I'll echo 76 on this one and if he gets too many mailed to him, maybe he'll share the wealth

Yes, I haven't any doubt there are illegal stills in the woods around here (WNC). I understand some counties are worse than others for this, with Yancy and Madison county coming to mind as having plenty of activity.

Sandymush and Laurel sections if you see game roosters in pens you could likely stop and smell the air for whisky makeing going on. be ready to leave - quickly.
what was we talking about? oh! kimbers. never owned one. I like my Colt 'Nam bringback.

I'll not defend Kimber quality, but the history of this department leaves something to be desired. It sounds like waste fraud and abuse of taxpayer $$ more than anything to me. How could any of these idiots have worn sig's out in such a relatively short period of time?
