I've wanted a 22 pistol for a bit now. Before today I knew of the Ruger MK2/3, Browning Buckmark and Sig Mosquito.

I noticed at the gun show today there is a Beretta 22 (don't recall price) similar to the Buckmark, a Smith and Wesson A22 (I think $275 show) and a Chiappa 1911-22 ($220 show) which all caught my eye and were inexpensive.

I've fired the Sig and the Ruger MK2 and 3 and read many reviews online. The reviews I trust the most have 2 attributes:

1. They are negative. (all the positive people might be paid)
2. They explain why. (I don't like Glock, HK, etc isn't a good enough reason for me)

Sorry to focus on the negative. Usually I don't just do this, I look at percentage of negative to positive and think about that also.

Has anyone used either the Chiappa, Beretta or Smith and Wesson A22 and have a reason why you wouldn't buy it?

I like my MK 2 Ruger but reuse to ever take down again . My girls like the Beretta 21A I bought last month . They like their small size and so far not one misfire or jam using CCI

I've a Chiappa 1911-22 biggest mistake I ever made. It won't go 30 rounds without a stovepipe ejection failure -- even shooting .22 ammo that costs near as much as cheap 9mm. What really chaps is I had to pay shipping to send it back and if anything it came back worse instead of fixed.

My advice, forget about it. The price on these has been dropping for a reason.

I have a S&W M22A fluted bull barrel and its by far my favorite .22 pistol. Accurate, reliable, and S&W has stood behind it. Early guns, of which mine was one has a problem with the way the upper hooks into the frame at the rear. They fixed it quickly paying the shipping both ways. About ~20,000 rounds later the firing pin broke, again they fixed it paying shipping both ways. Another ~15,000 round later firing pin broke again. In response to my Email they did as I suggested, sending me a slide rebuilt kit in the mail. Can't beat the service and support!

The Beretta Neos is a great pistol if you can get by its odd looks and the fact the safety rotates the wrong way. Its best feature is CDNN sells spare mags for $15, but it was $10 for a long time up until recently.

Also can't go wrong with a Buckmark, its my wife's favorite.

We've also got Ruger 10/22 MK3 and a MK2. While these are good pistols they are much less reliable in ejection and feeding than are the M22A, Neos, & Buckmark.

I used to have a Beretta Neos. They're cheaper than the Rugers and Brownings still I believe, but they're not junk by any means. The grip angle and safety are the biggest hurdles, they just don't work well for everybody, that's why I don't have mine any longer. Otherwise I found it to be an accurate and reliable pistol.
I'd suggest getting your hands on one before deciding either way, that grip can be a deal breaker. Kinda like with Glocks, it either works for you or it doesn't.

I'll second the P-22, I know someone who has an old Jennings J-22 that's lasted longer. My slide and frame have worn enough in 5K rounds that it won't lock the hammer back and is noiw Double action only unless I thumb the hammer back.

Of the ones I've owned, the ones I will never buy again are the Sig Mosquito, Taurus PT22 and the Ruger MK III (I've owned the MK I & II since early 1960 but my MK III is disappointing).

I have a Beretta Neos 6 inch 22 & overall it is a nice little gun.

Personally I like the grip angle & so far it has been a fun & reliable little plinker.

My 2 cents......

I had a Ruger 22/45. Good shooter, never a malf. But when it came time to field strip and clean look out. Serious pain in the a--. And thats why I sold it and bought the first Buckmark I came across. I wouldn't take a share in the rail road for it. Great shooter, easy to take apart and clean and not the first hiccup ever.... and no I don't work for nor have I been paid by Browning. Its just that I love my buckmark. Go get you a buckmark, you'll love it and all the years of reliability and fun it will give you!!!

Just because your paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you! :D

If you like 1911s, rather than the Chiappa (which it seems most people believe is junk), check out the GSG/ATI 1911 .22.

There are a few threads about it here giving the details, but all around it's a great and fun shooter. It's in my range bag every trip.

I had trouble with a lot of bulk ammo (notably Winchester and Remington), but Federal Bulk and CCI mini mags let the gun shoot like clockwork. Zero issues.

It might cost a hair more than the Chiappa, but it's well worth it. Definitely check it out if you're considering a 1911 .22.

I had a P22 and it was the biggest piece of junk I have ever shot. It had every kind of failure imaginable, with every type of ammo available. If I wanted a mag feed single shot I would possibly buy another. I sold it for $150 loss and still regret selling it, I should have destroyed it. IMO they are worth their weight in Zinc smelt, and not a penny more.

I bought a BuckMark and have been satisfied with it.

I think they recently put a recall out for those you might want to look in to it.

EDIT:

I did it for you.

The field strip takes a little bit to get used to, but I can do it blindfolded now. It's not bad once you understand the strut.
By the way your MKII is easy since you don't need to reinsert the magazine to release the hammer.

My experience with .22 pistols...

Walther P-22 jammed more than it fired unless I used CCI Stingers. It jammed somewhat less frequently with its chosen ammo. The gun shop said this is somewhat normal. I traded the P-22 back to the same shop for a Browning Buck Mark, this was a very good decision. The Buck Bark will eat any cheap brick ammo I feed it. To this day, I still have not had a failure. I am ashamed to admit that I have never cleaned it either.

I would not shy away from a Buck Mark. It will save you money on ammo because they are not picky eaters like some.

You all talked me into it and next show I'm buying a Browning Buckmark.

Thanks for the great input everyone

I have a Ruger 22/45 that works perfectly. I have two friends with mosquitos that are jam-o-matic pieces of garbage

The 22/45 is kind of a pain to field strip though.

I have
Browning Buckmark which is great.
Browning Challenger which is greater.
S&W 22S-1 which I'll sell to someone who wants it.

Now, the S&W is a fine pistol. I just don't want that much weight in a .22.

My 22/45 Mark III weighs 35oz. A 1911 weighs about 40oz. So no...not the same weight as a 44mag. Some weight is helpful on a target gun.
