Just wondering where you guys are shooting, I am in Northern Colorado (Fort Collins) and usually go to the Pawnee Grasslands to shoot (since we take the 12ga and big rifles out too). I know there is another place up Poudre Canyon, Stove Prarie where some people go. Any other spots around this area? How about indoor ranges?

My sister lives in Ft. Collins and mentioned that an indoor shooting range was to open soon. However, most indoor ranges are handgun only. But if you ever feel like tekkin' down to Elbert county, something could be worked out. Between me and my buddies, there are literally thousands of acres that we either own or have permission to use.

freakin colorado, go out of town a bit, lots and lots of places i am betting. kinda like south dakota. except you guys have denver the big city, btw i am very much fond of...

"There are a lot of places!" isn't too helpful. He already knows about Pawnee, and somebody owns everything else.

Northern Colorado Rod & Gun Club is up there.

I hit K2 in Lakewood for something indoor. (They allow fairly big rifles on their rifle range, which is benchrest only, and AR-15's are common on their pistol range, where you can shoot standing. They mentioned that .308 was ok on the pistol range too, but they wouldn't allow anything larger for noise reasons.)

Get on the list for the Weld County Fish & Wildlife range, near Ault. http://www.wcfw.org They are about 10 minutes closer to F.C. than the "usual" spot at Pawnee. Ranges and facilities are excellent. You are welcome at organized matches even if not a member.

I used to be a member at NCRGC, but let it lapse once I joined WCFW.

Other than that, there are a lot of organized events (shotgun, IPSC, 3Gun, steel, revolver, silhouette, Hi-Power, Benchrest) at Weld, Boulder, the Aurora Gun Club, Pueblo, Byers, Ben Lomand (sp).

If you shoot at Pawnee, make sure to pack in your targets and pack out all your trash, and any other junk you can. If you want to shoot long-range rifle in a "field" setting, there are a lot of safe places there to do it, and we don't want to lose it as a resource.

I also have a summary of Colorado practical shooting here: http://demigod.org/co3g

Zak is the resident Colorado shooting guru IMO. He was VERY helpful when I started shooting LR. BTW Zak I want to tag along to one of the Raton shoots with ya next year.

7.62, there is a CO-AR15 (http://coloradoshooting.org/co-ar15.htm) group shoot on the 12th of November down in Woodland park. We're meeting up at the McDonalds on Founders Parkway in Castle Rock at 8:30 that morning to trek down to the shooting spot. - Hoping Zak will show up too! - But you are more than welcome to come along to that. Hell I'll be happy to have you ride with me if you can make it to East Denver. Drop me an e-mail ([email protected]) and we'll square that away if you're interested.

"lots of places" isn't really true anymore, at least along the bulk of the Front Range. I can remember in 1990 that finding a place to shoot prairie dogs was about as hard as finding a McDonalds, but 15 years later, I literally do not know of one place within about a 200 mile circumference that I can shoot prairie dogs (doesn't mean there isn't, but if there is, it will be news to me), which sucks because I have a Model 70 in .223 that I really want to use in just that application.

well, I know thats true, but I have yet to discover an area out there that isn't private that has whistle pigs on it. Again, doesn't mean there isn't, but my own searches have yielded nothing...

I realize this is a rather old thread, but we are going to go to Greeley and Fort Collins this weekend, and I was wondering if we can shoot up there somewhere. Do you guys still go out in the Grasslands? Any directions on how to get to someplace not too far from Greeley? I noticed in the newspaper in Greeley a few months back that someone was working on an outdoor range. Did they ever get that going? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, John from Manitou Springs.

If you ever find yourself up near Boulder, take Broadway into town (N) and make a left on Lee Hill Road. Follow that until it T intersects, make a left, and take your first right up the off-road area. Drive a quarter a mile, park, and have a blast. Left Hand Canyon Rules. Just don't leave your garbage or they'll close it for ever.

Thank you guys for the responses. We are supposed to go to Greeley and Ft C tomorrow to hang out with the kids, will probably try to make it out to shoot. Have an AR to test, and some shotgun stuff, and the 45 auto, and, well, probably more stuff. I have some steel to shoot at. Hopefully that is acceptable. We will see. Thanks again, John T.

If you're considering indoor, Front Range Gun Club in Loveland is a friendly place. Handguns, any rifle except .50BMG, slugs only in shotguns. Tell Ed I sent you.

Agree with DaveBeal on FRGC in Loveland on Denver Ave east of US34 .... great folks - day range pass I believe is $15

Also tell'em Gerry sent you

So we made it to the grasslands last saturday. We stopped at one place that was about a quarter mile long, maybe the first place you can shoot at, it was kind of busy, so we went up the road a bit and found another road/trail off to the left where we had to open the barbed wire gate and drove over to place that had burnt, and shot there. Daughter's boyfriend had a brand new rem 870, we bought a hand chucker and case of birds at Wolly Wurld, and proceded to blast the clays. We had a Baby Eagle 9mm, an AR I built on a Double Star rec, and a Officers 45. A great time there. We will go back in the spring. Thanks for the info on that. John T.
