If you live in a rough city, this is what you train for

I'm still not convinced that this video wasn't made by some hard working film students. If that's what it is then they deserve an A+ because the video is quite convincing or not.....

I cut my big city chops in Uptown Kansas City back in the early '80s (think Armour Blvd., Broadway, Main St., Plaza neighborhood).

I go back periodically but I guarantee that I would never ever walk or run those streets again after midnight, especially, without a good flashlight a dependable firearm with plenty of ammo and most of all...... drum roll please...

...sobriety...

:scrutiny:

Right next to KC Life and the Uptown Theatre where I went as a kid for the summer matinees. You probably went to Westport High.

Moved to the Denver area for 30 years, came back 2 years ago and it is absolutely unbelievable. Hadn't fired a gun in 30 years, but now have 11 or 12, carry everyday and sometimes worried it's not enough. A journey to Quik Trip can be a life-ending event at any time. But no matter what happens, it's all our fault....

Just to add > very similar incident as shown on video happened this summer in the Westport area of KC - used to be college kids, yuppies having a good time in the area.

A bunch of blacks beat a white kid to death (videos were on YouTube for a short while). Closing time, whitey was alone. Found him on the street. Cops didn't classify it as a homicide for 2 months even though everyone knew what happened. 1 guy finally arrested and the perp claims he was defendng himself and it was an accident.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if it's a ghost town now after 10pm.

Doghandler, the video was not staged. It was covered by multiple news sources and was the subject of much attention in the media and online in the days following the attack.

You can see an interview with one of the victims here:

http://www.nbc12.com/Global/story.asp?S=13930920#

Of course that could be faked too, anything can be really. Some people believe the moon landing was staged. I guess sometimes you just have to take peoples word for it.

Wow, having (until now) always lived in country areas where you could sleep on top of/inside of your car, or on the ground, or stumbled your way back at any God-forsaken hour in preparation for what was frequently a race to the top of all time hangovers, this is very different.

I hate to think how many of those "can't walk the line to straight" nights would have ended. But lets just say there were crooked lines in the grass all throughout town.

Heck, if I was road-tripping around for fun, I thought nothing of stopping at a small town bar and parking myself there 'till the morning.

Got it...

Even Batman couldn't have found a better place to have a street fight - what with the hump in the sidewalk and the steel railing (why do you think we call it a high road?). Sorry....

Back in 1980 I would have been carrying a Buck 110. Mostly these days I carry Benchmades or Spydies. I'm particularly fond of my Caly 3.

My best advice would be to pary the close guys first punch, punch him in the chest with your knife and rip it all the way down trough his crotch.

Now stand up and tell the rest of those little bang boys to back off... or whatever...

... or if you have a handgun handy fell free to open fire any time. :uhoh:

This video is a good lesson. Even a High Road is no answer if you are oblivious to it's merits.

re: the concept of "don't go there..." while possibly true, this type of thing can and does also happen anywhere - even at the mall, and has. having said that -
Solution: A swift kick in the face of the first attacker as he tries to climb up the wall.
I like that for starters. You know nothing good is going to go down anyway, so get in the first blow - it may dissuade the rest. Someone made the observation we no longer train our youngers in selfdefense and they've always been punished for fighting. No kid knows anymore that there is such a thing as righteous battle...

as for me - I can't run, can't even walk. One knee replacement, one hip replacement and another hip replacement coming in March... that's why I have my CCW permit.

You fellas ever heard of "Freaknik?"

Let's just say I've been in a similar situation. The way to handle that is to keep your dang mouth shut. He was obviously talking trash back to them. While he might have gotten away with it if there was only one thug there, they WILL NOT let it go in a group. They egg each other on until one of them has the guts to get physical. Of course in a group like that, it doesn't take much because they are aware that they can't lose with their numbers advantage.

Even in places where it is illegal to carry a gun, most of the time it is still legal to carry a pocket knife. If you have a good one that locks open and is as large as is legal in your area you've got a pretty good deterrent. And a pretty decent weapon if it comes to that.

Imagine if that kid had not said a word back to them, but as they followed him if he had put his back to the building (so he didn't get blindsided) and flicked open a pocketknife about four inches long.

Do you still think any of those ghetto scum would have gotten within arms reach of him? Probably not. And if they did... he would have been a lot more effective than using his fists. Going for the throat with a four inch pocket knife ain't no joke. Even a street thug knows that. ESPECIALLY a street thug knows that.

I think one of the most important things to take away from this video is about "trash talking."

Basically, don't do it. If you mouth off to a bunch of thugs in a group, they will egg each other on until one of them (or all of them) gets the gonads to do something about it. They work each other up to it until they have no remorse about kicking your face into a coma. If you say something rude to a group like that, you are basically taking away their choice in it. Even if they said something to you first, their friends are going push them into a confrontation if you respond.

Once you insult them, there is literally ZERO chance of there not being a fight if they think they can get away with it without getting killed or becoming a cripple. Some people don't even care if they do get killed. Their "homies" just listened to you insult them. Now they are forced to fight you or else their buddies lose respect for them.

That's something that middle class white kids do not understand about hanging out in the wrong part of town. With certain kinds of people, insulting them guarantees a fight. Whether they actually want to fight you has absolutely nothing to do with it. The people they see every day just heard a scrawny white kid insult him, so he has to fight the scrawny white boy. That is the way it is with groups like that. People ignore that at their own peril.

Do not talk trash. Ever. If you need to fight, fight. If you need to shoot, shoot. No sense in letting them know what to expect.

And while you may have to use profanity to get your point across in a tense situation, don't insult BGs. As in, don't say "... you ugly excuse for a person.", never insult his/her contribution to the gene pool, geneology, etc.

That brings up the pride, where as if it is a more forceful version of "Back OFF!", the BG won't take it (as) personally (hopefully).

My sentiments exactly. Excuse my bluntness, but this kind of thing really burns my biscuits! If they want to act like animals, they should be put down like animals.

Very well stated Mr Shackleford. Your description of the dynamics of that kind situation are, I think, spot-on.

If the victims indeed did fat-mouth the attackers, then they bear some responsibility for having escalated the situation, ignorance notwithstanding.

Don't get me wrong......Not that what happened might not have happened anyway and not that they in any way "deserved" what they ended up getting.

A terrible thing.

Don't mess around with people you don't know or don't understand. Don't engage in conflict unless you really are capable and prepared to engage.
