I picked up a Springfield GI.45 "Champion" model earlier this year and the first time that I was able to shoot it was last weekend. I really like the gun, it's reliable and fits well in my hand. What I don't like, however, is the sights (or lack thereof).
True to the GI styling of the gun the sights are black on black and the front sight is little more than a bump on the slide. I noticed that I had a really hard time lining up my sights especially against a black bullseye ring.
I came up with a couple of solutions (i.e. white/red model paint, whiteout, etc.) but I was honestly hoping for something a little less "spit and bailing wire." The rear sight is dovetailed and is windage adjustable but the front site is integral to the slide. I did some cursory checking for aftermarket sights but none seem to be able to "drop in" to the GI.45 frame.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to enhance the site without too much hassle or gunsmithing? I'd love something that I can do myself, I'm not opposed to a drop in rear sight and putting a dab of paint or something on the front one. I was also considering getting some Crimson Trace grips for the gun which would solve the problem, but I want some higher visibility sights as a fail safe. Besides not really sure I want to spend $300 on the gun right now.
