What are my options is I want to utilize cheap, inexpensive Russian imported 7.62x39 centerfire ammo for plinking/target shooting that is not an AK or SKS?

Not that I think anything is wrong with an AK or SKS, the ergonomics (short stock), terrible sights leave much to be desired. I'm opposite a Russian conscript, tall 6'2" with long arms.

The Ruger Mini-30 is a possibility but I heard it does not run will with steel cased ammo.

The PTR-32 is a hybrid of a German HK 7.62 Nato battle rifle that is converted to fire 7.62x39 and use AK mags. I guess the big downside is that it is all steel and weights nearly 10 lbs.

Sig Sauer has a new for 2011 model 556R that shoots 7.62x39. I guess that is interesting since I think Sig has seemed to be abandoning the heavy 556 line in favor of the AR type rifles.

Obviously you can get an AR chambered in 7.62x39 but I heard they have magazine issues.

The only really cheap centerfire ammo available is really the 7.62x39. The russian 7.62x54R is really cheap too but not too many guns are avaible that shoot it other than Mosin-Nagant bolt guns.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Ain't nothing cheap about a Mini-30....I guess there's always the Saiga, even though I don't consider it "cheap"...I'd rather have a good SKS.

h&r or nef one made a cheap break down single shot 7.62x39. I know because the dumb pos married to my grandmother has one and he thinks its an ak, th guy who sold it to him told him it was

Don't quote me but I do believe Remington had a bolt action rifle that is now discontinued that was 7.62x39mm, I think it was called the Model 599 but I could be wrong. I do however wish they would come out with more options for 7.62x54R & 7.62x39mm in classic bolt action applications.

I was going to point you towards the CZ 527 too, or the CZ VZ-58, looks kind of similiar to an AK but a different and (I think) better rifle, internals are all different, it's a neat rifle.

Savage makes one now too. It's a Savage Model 10 FCM Scout. You can find it under the Law Enforcement series tab.

EDIT: Actually after looking on their website they have a few. Here's a list of them:

Savage Model 10 FCM Scout (Law Enforcement Series tab)
Savage Model 11 FCNS (Hunter Series tab)

How about a sks with an aftermarket stock and tech sights? The new plastic stocks lighten the rifle a bit, add length and ergonomics, and the tech sights are supposed to be a huge improvement over the factory sights. I bet if you could find an sks with no grenade launcher attachment on it, it would balance out better. I have been doing work on my friends sks. We put a tapco stock on it, removed the bayo, ladder sight, and a few other things. It really did make a major difference in the feel of the rifle. Another plus of the sks is that it uses stripper clips. No mags to go bad or cause feed issues.

Thank's AA080, Model 799. Does anyone know why they discontinued it? I would have a hard time believing it was from lack of sales due to the popularity of the 7.62x39.

CZ makes a bolt action chambered for the 7.62x39 in the 527 series. If you really want to rock and roll Czechpoint sells the CZ VZ58 Military Sporter. It's a semi auto that is hands down a better design than the AK. I've owned one for a little over a year now and have been totally enjoying it. I set mine up with ZAHAL goodies, but Czechpoint sells different variations already tricked out. JMHO

Savage makes one now too. It's a Savage Model 10 FCM Scout.

Anyone buy one of these yet? They look interesting, but with the only other caliber that model is offered in being .308Win, I'm concerned Savage is only cutting an 7.62x39 chamber on the .308 barrels rather than using the correct .311 bore for surplus x39 ammo.

I have a standard, unconverted Saiga and love it. It is light, accurate, and fun to shoot. Since I live in the PRK, it also draws little attention from the law. This is nice when I am shooting with my family.

5 STARS for the Czech 527. My son-in-law went in with his siblings and his father to buy one for the Mom. Its short and light with many custom touches. I've fired it; the recoil is light yet the 7.62 X 39 cartridge will put a deer down in a hurry. Recommended hunting ammo: WINCHESTER SUPER X 123 gr soft tip.
