Post some of the funny stuff you've heard on the range.

There was a guy at the range waiting for me and a friend to finish , he started to chat us up bout the 45 rounds we were using, I told him they were 230grain, he said that he only carried 185gr in his Glock cause the 230gr made his gun feel too heavy

ohh the horror stories...

Had some guy at the range once tell me that he had a $40 box of military grade "man stoppers". Slightly laughing, I asked to see them. He pulled out a box of Federal FMJ...you know the kind they sell at Wal-Mart...He got it at a gun show with his gun ($600 used Glock 17 as a first gun...didn't go into that)

I told him that's what I was shooting too...only mine were $10 from Wal-Mart. Then explained ammo to him, in hopes he wouldn't be tricked again.

Fortunately, this is yet another reason to wear proper hearing protection

"This gun is not accurate." Then his friend picks it up and shoots a very nice, tight group with it.

First guy offers to let second guy shoot his .41 Magnum.

Second guy (after shooting) "yeah, that's nice but I'm don't much care for all of these oddball new calibers <referring to the .41 Magnum>, I'd rather stick with something tried and true like a good old .44 Magnum.

I tried to get him to understand that the .41 Mag was created around 1965 so it was hardly a "new" caliber at this point but he didn't seem to care.

Was picking up some range fodder at gunstore when a couple of guys came in to do the same. I picked up a few boxes of black hills seconds as that is what was cheapest. These two guys (younger, 20ish) were getting premium hollow points and talking it up. I head out to my favorite wooded shooting spot and who shows up? Yep. They blasted probly $200 worth of the good stuff into paper and the side of the hill. And no they were not function checking it, just thought hollow points are cooler than fmj.

"I use Winchester Nato when I'm carrying away from home. It works a lot better at stopping. The only reason to use hollow points is so they don't go through the wall and kill your neighbor."

"I shot a guy with my .45 as he was comin' in the window. They found his body in the bushes and his head in the street."

"You can't shoot hollow points in a 1911."

"I don't use a laser 'cause if you accidentally shine it in the mirror you might go blind."

".380 is bigger than a 9mm. It's even bigger than a .357."

I heard a woman tell her husband this as I uncased my Mosin M-44 and extended the bayonet...

"those assault rifles are illegal, aren't they?"

A mosin is even a scary black rifle in some peoples eyes! I cant help that it shoots better with that tent peg sticking out!

The guy in the next shooting position, who had been testing his new rifle for accuracy, was bringing his 100 yard target in and he had a disgusted look on his face.

I noticed the 10 rounds in his target looked like a shotgun with 00-Buck was let loose on it at 25 yards. To cheer him up I said that he had at least one in the X-ring to which he replied, "Yeah, obviously a 'flyer'."

"You don't need more than 5 rounds, what you need is a posse"



Well ... that is always me saying it.

I was at the range with a few of my friends when these kids show up. They didn't bring any guns to shoot, just seemed like some kids wasting time. I was stripping some rounds into my Mosin model 1944 when one of them asks me, "Yo, is that a fifty cal?"

Since I am relatively new to shooting, the stupid stuff was usually coming from me in the beginning. Now when I hear or see someone saying or doing something "funny", I remember when I was in their shoes and try to help with the very limited knowledge I have. Condescending snobbery doesn't help anyone, and doesn't get more people interested in the sport.

I understand that a lot of it is simply ignorance to firearms, and you can't blame folks who want to learn. I have a few friends I'm getting into hunting/shooting and they ask some pretty hilarious questions just because they don't know. That doesn't mean it isn't funny though, I think we can still laugh about it. I usually chuckle right in their faces, I bet they think I'm crazy...always laughing whenever they ask a question

But I do my best to explain correctly and then they learn something new. I'll try and think of a few.

It hasn't been TOO bad out where I'm at.

Only bad one I have heard at the range was one guy out there shooting a fairly standard run of the mill AR-15. He was coming by chatting because I happened to have my 1858 Remington cap and ball out shooting that day (it always draws in some extra conversation). He pointed to his rifle and said something to the effect of "Yeah I'm shooting an M16 like the army uses, except it's only semi-auto. You have to have a special license to get one - not just anybody can get them. My brother is a cop and was able to get me that one.". I just kinda smiled and nodded.

Another bad line I heard wasn't on the range - it was in my hunters education course when I was younger. The instructor - who claimed to be a firearms expert, told us all with a straight face that if you wanted to you could fire .380ACP in a 9mm Luger handgun. ".380 is just 9mm Short" he said. Somehow I'm guessing he was confusing the fact that you can fire .38 Special in a .357 Mag, but that's not the type of mistake I'd expect from an instructor claiming to be an "expert".

Oh, and most annoying are the idiots who are out on the range making videos for youtube. Not the guys talking about a gun or recording something information. Those are fine and welcomed. I'm talking about the idiots doing stupid stuff. Had one pair shooting up a target with a shotgun while his buddy recorded. Once the shotgun was empty he turns to the camera saying something "Don't you know I'm loco?" and throws one of those cheap flea-market Rambo knives at the target (doesn't stick in or anything - just bounces off).

+1 !!! Perfect! I do all I can to avoid all this type of range chit-chat. Luckily, I shoot at a membership only club's range so many of the idiots are weeded out.

Well mine wasn't at the range but I have had a surprising number of people ask me "aren't hollow points illegal" and "don't you need a license to own a gun" Can't really blame them though, they just aren't gun people. I had some pretty dumb questions when I was first getting into shooting.

I never went back to that range.

Another range shooting skeet I hear " I dont know how you guys can shoot a 20 gauge they kick too much thats why I use a 12 gauge"

Another good one probaly the best Ive heard too "I wouldnt own a 44 mag my 45 ACP is twice the gun and as you know 45 is bigger than 44 so mine is more powerful than yours."

"I would never buy an AK. They are too unreliable."

I though my head was going to explode.

"Let's shoot the 9mm for awhile. It's more powerful than the .357."

I was at the range,here,And as I reloaded,a young fella turned to me And said"If you turn it sideways,it won't kick as much".

I had one guy tell me the 44 Auto Mag was loaded with "240 grains of black powder". I asked him were he heard that and he said he was sure it was correct as he read it in a book. I asked to see the book and he showed me. IIRC it was one of the "Executioner" series and it did indeed show the 240 gr charge. I didnt bother trying to explain it to him.

In another one of his books it said "the .357 Magnum is capable of penetrating six inches of solid steel". I did tell him that if you shot a 6 inch steel plate with a 357 Mag you might get a little ding in it.

Jeez. That would be like taking your car in to get the brakes done and having to buy your own wheels and tires to put them back on.

I guess that means the military can retire ma deuce and replace them with .357 Mag revolvers .

I'm gonna use this SKS for deer hunting. Its good out to 1000 yards. Check out this flip up sight.
