Ditto....been contemplating one in 45/70...but haven't found anyone with any actual experience owning/shooting one.

Not many of these have leaked through into the country but you can read about those on the forums at AccurateReloading.com and NitroExpress.com
You might have to search around a little, but information is there.

As to regulation, they have a jackscrew buried in the bottom rib that lets you flex the barrels and regulate for your own choice in ammo, within reason.

IIRC barrels are regulated at 50yds. There is a barrel jack underneatheth to adjust if needed. Haven't shot it yet. I paid the princely sum of $699 (NIB) + tax, marked down from $775. They go for around $1K on gunbroker.

Where did you get the hatchet?

Beautiful rifle, odd to think a Russian rifle in an American cartridge, I would have thought that it would be in some vintage Russian caliber.

Looks like an ideal brush gun for North America!

That is a Bear Mountain Rogers Rangers Spike Hawk with sharpened beard and mirror polish to the bevels and perimeter.

The rifle has extractors. They were also imported in 45-70 Govt. I however would have preferred 7.62x54R if I had my choice of caliber. At least at this price point. For a "proper" double rifle .375H&H would be my minimum caliber.

Range Report

OK. Finally got down to the farm for some shooting. We were out of standard bullseye targets. Since I had read that barrel regulation can be hit or miss with the Baikals I set the target up at approx 25M. I was using some 1978 vintage Greek M2 ball.

Target at 25M. Braced kneeling position, no sling. 3 shots each barrel. I aimed at the center of the 8.5x11" piece of paper.

That is good enough for me! None of us had any trouble hitting targets of opportunity inside of 100M. Only problem was that the barrels got damn hot.

I obviously need to do more shooting for groups with different hunting loads but I was more interested in having fun Friday.

yeah. i check now and then. ive seen both the .30-06 and .45-70 versions on there for right around 700. so after shipping and a transfer 750-800. but im on a poor college kid budget so itll have to wait

I too am a poor college kid but i happened to luck into one of these for a VERY good price. It was NIB when i got it and since then it has had 2 rounds, one in each barrel through it.

There's more of them around than you think, some are marked Remington, as Rem. cataloged and sold quite a few of them too.... If you look, you will find them, as i've had several chances to buy them in 30-06 and 45/70gov.

I still lust after a "real" double rifle. Chapuis SXS's in 9.3x74R are about $5K. Merkel has SXS's in 470NE for about $10K.
