Good day gentleman.
Tomorrow morning i'm going to a local gun show with $700.00 in my pocket and strong will to buy me a handgun.
So i need your input as i'm very green when it comes to handguns.

OK, here are the guide lanes.

I don't like 9mm, i want to go 357SIG, .40S&W or .45 ACP.
I don't like Glocks, Rugers nor "no name" Saturday Night Specials.
I'll be looking at Sig, HK or 1911 style gun.

Anything you can recommend ? Any other brand names i'm overlooking ?
The gun will be used for occasional range time and home defense. Heavy use not in the near future.
TIA,
Cezar.

I love these threads! Spending other peoples' money is awesome.

My suggestions:

Springfield Armory Range Officer (right around $700)
Springfield Armory G.I. .45
Sig Sauer P229 .40 S&W (I am fond of the two-tone)
- Not sure this will be available for $700 though
CZ P07 .40
Beretta PX4 Storm .40 (I love mine)
Beretta 96A1

Have a blast, get something sweet, and post pictures.

Nearly everyone likes SIG pistols. The guns work reliably, shoot accurately and don't need fixing and fooling with out of the box--unlike some brands.

I like the classic SIG DA/SA lockwork with the decocker, a very rational system. (I mostly shoot revolvers so not having to disengage a safety is a good idea.)

Buy used and spend the rest on ammo. Spending all your money on a gun is great till you want to shoot it. Also look into CZ.

YEAH! JUST THE BIGGEST THING TO HIT THE MARKET SINCE THE GLOCK!

Smith&Wesson M&P.

Law enforcement agencies by the dozens are dropping glock like a rock and switching to the S&W M&P.

You definitely want the 45cal version.

edit: EAA Witness comes to mind also

If I had $700 to spend I would get a Kimber Solo! However your best deal may not be at a gun show? Use the show to window shop then check online for the best price.

Edit: I seen you don't like 9's

I would go with a Rock Island 1911 and spend the rest on ammo.

I second this.

Can't beat the Rock Island Armory 1911s.

(don't let the folks with money turn you off of them due to their low price)

Rock Island M1911 Tactical .45- $490

CZ P-06 .40- $575

CZ 97 .45- $597

FNP .357- $429

FNP .40- $450

S&W M&P 40- $454

Kimber

Well, let the buyer beware! Kimber has had some serious recent problems and for sure stay away from the SigP238!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kimber are not what they used to be!

Rock Island

I have had four (key word being HAD) and got rid of all as soon as I could dump them!!!!!!!!!!!! I Use Springfield.

Good for you! I had the same 'problem' a few years ago when I started buying handguns. Except I had about $900.00.

I tried a lot of different guns and ended up falling in love with a 1911. Happened to be a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II. GREAT GUN and I continue to love it (I'm actually wearing it right now).

I imagine you'll have fun checking out all of the guns you mentioned, and some you haven't. Then you'll fall in love with one and get it. You really can't go wrong with the guns you've mentioned. So have fun with it, and let us know what you end up getting.

Gentleman.
Well, i did it. I came back home with brand spanking new SigSauer P250, the full size one. .45 ACP.
The gun is brand new, box, papers and 5 original clips. Never fired by previous/first owner who happen to be an Police officer.
Price ? Tad under $600.00 Not spectacular but i think it was still pretty good deal.
I'll take it to the range this week to see what it can do. One thing that is kinda off for me is the weight of the gun. It feels light, i wonder how bad the recoil will be. And the safety, there is none. No manual safety lever on the gun, never saw it before.
Well, i hope it shoots as good as it looks.
How did i do ?
Cezar.

For the money you could have gotten into a Sig P220 which can be argued as one of the best .45's around.

How come you chose the 250 over the 220 when you seem to be worried about the 250's light weight?

Hate to bring bad news but i think you over paid. The p250's are being given away it seems

Full size P250 .45 with night sights at Budsgunshop for $414
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_28/products_id/52437

Same thing at TopGunSupply for $399
http://www.topgunsupply.com/sig-sauer-p250-full-size-.45acp-nitron-siglite-night-sights-dao.html

and these are common prices, not some oddity that can be found online only.

P220's start at $700 in the new market and can be found as cheap as $450 in the used market.

Be nice guys... different strokes for different folks. We all were new at this at some point.

For a $700.00 Budget with your preferences I would stay away from new Sigs Not made in germany.

Smith And Wesson M&P 45acp MidSize. Thumb Safety Version With No Magazine Safety. 10 Round Magazine.
OR
Smith And Wesson M&P 40s&w MidSize. Thumb Safety Version With No Magazine Safety. 13 Round Magazine.

These Should be around $700 With Night Sights.

When In comes to HK

Hk P30 in 40 s&w is one of the best handguns on the market Period,
however it would be around $900.00
The Hk45C is a the same league it is one of the best 45 Autos on the market around $1,000.00

1911s
they are great if you have a reliable one...
For $700.00 I would look at a Loaded Model Springfield, However not if this was my only handgun..I would skip the 1911 if thats the case.

Newer Sigs NOT German Made Models have little To NO Quality Control for the commercial market, I know this from first hand experience.

So Hk, SmithWesson, Maybe give the Glock a second look.

He said he got 5 magazines though. I doubt they come with more than 2. He probably got almost 100bucks worth in additional magazines.
