I am thinking of building a long range bolt gun.
Still not decided on a caliber yet.

These are the finalists so far:

.338 RUM
.338 EDGE
.408 CheyTac
.416 Barrett

I am not interested in .300WM, .338 Lapua Mag, or .50BMG.

If their is anything else out there that you can think of go ahead and post it.

Mostly it will be used for punching paper, but I still want it light enough for deer and moose hunting. I am thinking of using a Savage receiver so that I can have different barrels to swap out for target vs. hunting.

6.5x284 or 7mmRM.......meh, I would rather have a larger projectile going down range.

Depends on what your definition of long range is? If long range is over 1500yds, 416 Barret or 408 cheytac. The ballistic advantage goes to the 416, but the 408 is know for excellent accuracy. The 408 loads are more expensive I believe though. If you keep it inside 1500yds just go with a 7wsm.

What do you define as "Long Range"? Are we talking maximum under 1200yds, or 1200yds+ consistently?
The heavy magnums are great for serious long range shooting, but are sort of a waste of money if you only plan to shoot at 600-1000yds.

I'm expecting to do most of the shooting with this rifle at 1000-1500 yds.

Looking at the .408 and .416 bullet selections isn't all that inspiring. Doesn't seem to be a lot offered, and yeah, that stuff is expensive.

Is it unrealistic to build something like this light enough that it could also be used for hunting? The thought of a large heavy rifle dedicated to punching paper doesn't appeal to me. Seems impractical.

i have a 338LM and was looking into 416 barrett but at the the time ammo, and brass were extremely hard to locate. 408 chey-tac seemed to be slightly easier to obtain brass and ammo. once you step to the .40 class long range, good b.c. bullets are very expensive, $2+ if i remember correctly. if money is not an object I would go with the chey-tac hands down. if money is somewhat a consideration i would go 338 edge. that would help keep brass/bullet/powder costs considerably lower. as for range any of them are capable of oustanding range with energy to harvest game, if the shooter is up to task. Big bore long range is extremely fun, addictive and expensive
